Perfect holiday get away

  • 5 out of 5
Reminded me of the friendliness and peace you find in Cornwall except for the view of the Pyreneese from the bedroom window!
15 mins from the very friendly restaurants and shops of St Gaudens, five mins from Aurignac and three mins from the local Boulangerie, this house was a real find. The sat nav will get you to Aurignac and follow owners (very good directions) from there
You could easily get your provisions from Le Clerk and bolt the gate for a week.
The Boulangerie for fresh daily bread, and pastries (that are not weightwatchers friendly) is a three min drive. The baker is lovely
We arrived on bank holiday May 1st and the supermarket (Le Clerk massive supermarket) was closed but the baker sold us cheese, eggs and bread and the owners had left us a bottle of wine so we just sat in the sunshine and drank wine and ate bread and cheese and took in the view. I would recommend the house as a get away from it all; for couples, a girls weekend or a family holiday. Easily room for two families and there's a down stairs en suite bedroom if you decide to bring granny to babysit
The garden has a lovely pool, play area, swings seesaw etc for little ones, a nice sized garden to run around or sunbathe and if its too hot outside, there's an indoor games room (books, videos, pool table) and a shaded gated patio, ideal for lo's. We had breakfast in the morning on the raised sun patio beside the play area and the view is fab.
We spent most of our time in the garden, and out and about locally. St Gaudens is 15 mins away and there are some lovely restaurants and coffee shops. The French are very organised with breakfast dinner and tea so if you turn up looking for lunch at 2 or 3 o clock, they look at you like you are crazy, but they do serve coffee and pastries any time of the day. So if you want lunch, arrive at 12 or 1pm. the food in Hotel St Laurans is magnificent, there's a leaflet with the phone number on the kitchen notice board of the house. We also went to Lourdes for the day. Very interesting and the views of the Pyrenees on the way are beautiful.
We lit the wood burner at about 9pm each evening and it was lovely to sit and watch a video or English (or french) TV.
The house inside was beautiful. Bedrooms very spacious. The kitchen has every pot pan and utensil Nigella Lawson would ever need! There is a baby gate on the front door (clever idea) so you can have the front door wide open and baby proof
We really enjoyed our stay and will be back

A Little Piece of Paradise

  • 5 out of 5
I felt compelled to write a review on this property. I have stayed in a lot of villas/houses over the years but one thing that made this property stand out from the rest was this felt like a home rather than a rental property. From the moment you drove up to the property you could see that this was a house lovingly restored and inside didn't disappoint either. The rooms were tastefully decorated and the kitchen fully equipped. To be honest we were there for one week and only really left the house to get provisions. We did venture into the nearby town Aurignac but only because we felt we should do. We were happy in our little bubble up on a hill with stunning views and only the sound of church bells. We went with another couple and our 11 year old son who took full advantage of the pool and us (several games of water volleyball, petanque and yahtzee) and lazed on loungers in the day. Come evening we would barbecue and sit out all evening (never used the lounge or switched on the TV once) or play pool and darts in the games room. For all you tech addicts I would say there is no WIFI at this house and the mobile phone signal is weak but that suited us just fine.

Beautiful House and Stunning Area

  • 5 out of 5
We highly recommend this holiday home. We had the most wonderful and relaxing time there in October. The house is in a small village surrounded by beautiful countryside and the views from the house and garden are stunning. The house is lovely and has a relaxed feel to it with a mix of French/English country house style. The kitchen is well equipped and spotlessly clean. We didn’t have children with us but everything looked very child friendly and the pool had child safety gates and a pool alarm.

A typical day for us would start by buying bread (and any pastries that couldn’t be resisted) from the artisan boulangerie a short drive out of the village – not to be missed because it is the best in the area – then into Aurignac for coffee and any groceries we might need. Aurignac has a good tourist information office and we found them very helpful. There are cafes and a particularly good café/piano bar which had just opened. The hotel in the centre of town do very good lunches and you can sit outside and watch the world go by and we would recommend it.

We would then get back to St Lary Boujean to enjoy a leisurely lunch outside. Afternoons were spent by the pool relaxing and going in the pool for the occasional swim to cool off. There is a circular walk around the village which takes about 30 mins which we did most days before dinner. It was so relaxing at the house that we didn’t feel the need to go out in the evening. We would play pool or darts and I was able to get through a couple of the books from the well-stocked book case.
We did have a day out to the Pyrenees which was well worth the trip and the scenery was wonderful. St Gauden has the nearest large supermarket which is just outside the town. St Gauden has a large market on Thursday but you have to be in early to get a parking space. It also has lots of nice boutique type shops and a lovely church. We had lunch a couple of times at The Pizzeria Café l’Entracte in Place Napoleon and the food was very good and inexpensive.

Blissfully Relaxing week in gorgeous house

  • 5 out of 5
We spent a blissfully relaxing week in August at this beautiful house. We were spoiled with sunshine all week, and made the most of the pool during the day and the barbeque area in the evening.

Our older children (12 & 14) forgot their phones and computers, and enjoyed family time, playing darts, pool and table tennis all week. They had the best time, and didn't miss Facebook one bit! Our youngest (4) set up camp under the umbrella on the grass next to the pool with her toys, and when it was too hot, she went in to the cool of the lounge, and watched a little bit of CBeebies. It was great to be able to have access to home comforts too.

The house itself was gorgeous. All of the rooms were so elegantly decorated, but with a lovely homely feel. Our older children shared the dormitory-style bedroom, which they loved, and we stayed upstairs opposite our youngest. The house could have easily slept another family.

We only went out for dinner once, as we enjoyed spending the evenings at the house. We went to a restaurant recommended by the ownerscalled l'hôtel Saint Laurans, in Aurignac, and had a great meal. There were lots of lovely shops, cafes and boulangeries to wander round too. We got croissants each morning from the boulangerie a couple of minutes drive away, which were far too delicious. Grocery shopping was a 10 minute drive in Saint Gaudens.

St Lary Boujean was a pretty hamlet, virtually traffic-free, where we walked off the (many) croissants for miles. The views from the house and its immediate surrounds were nothing short of breathtaking.

We were all a bit sad to leave at the end of our week. In fact the only thing that cheered us up wasthe thought of coming be back the following year.

Saint Lary Boujean:-

A beautiful hamlet located on a peaceful hilltop within the foothills of the Pyrénées. As well as stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the mountains, it is just a 10-15 minute drive to Aurignac, Saint Gaudens or Boulogne-sur-Gesse with supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and local attractions are located. Its proximity to the Pyrenees offers easy access to ski resorts which offer all year round walking, climbing, and water sports. There are also a number of thermal spas within an hour’s drive. There is a fantastic boulongerie with the original mill, five minutes drive. The boulongerie’s van visits the village twice a week if you are unable to make the short journey.

The local area is steeped in ancient history, with many Roman ruins easily accessible to the public. These are clearly signposted in the area.

Aurignac (10mins):-

The nearby picturesque mediaeval town of Aurignac provides excellent butchers, green grocers, a wine cave, bakers, restaurants, cafés, banks, a small cinema, a post office plus a doctor’s surgery and a pharmacy. There is also a lovely playground for children aged 2-10. There is a small market in the town on Tuesdays and Saturdays. During summer regular concerts and events take place, including an open air cinema, a night market, street theatre and world music. Classical concerts and further cultural events are also held in the Bishops Palace at Alan a further 5 minute drive from Aurignac.

Saint Gaudens (15mins):-

Lies right at the base of the Pyrenean Mountains, which gives it a truly spectacular setting. It is an ancient fortified town, whose mediaeval walls impart a sense of history to all who look on them. Built in the 11th century, and extended in the 14th century, the fortifications were modified when the internal walls were demolished in the 16th century.

Saint Gaudens has many lovely old cobbled streets and fascinating corners to explore. It also has a useful modern side to it, and as a sizeable town it can offer pretty much everything you may need. There are a number of shops and large supermarkets, doctors, dentists, schools and banks. There are plenty of good restaurants in which you can soak up the atmosphere of the town, enjoy a glass or two of wine and try the local gastronomic specialities. All tastes and pockets are catered for.

Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (36 km):-

Is one of the 'most beautiful villages of France’ and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village is in a lovely sleepy location, surrounded by the lush green valleys of the region and overlooked by the Pyrenean foothills. In addition there is a lovely golf course overlooking a lake - Golf Du Comminges.

Built on the site of a Roman city, it was once a large town called Lugdunum Convenarum, where Pompeii ruled over 10,000 inhabitants. Things have changed slightly and the village now has about 250 inhabitants!

Further afield:-

Carcassonne (1hr 30 mins) with its famous walled mediaeval castle town and Albi (1hr 30 mins) with its spectacular red brick Cathedral. In addition you are equidistant from the beaches of Biarritz on the Atlantic and Narbonne Plage on the Mediterranean Coastline (240km).

Airports:-

Toulouse Airport is 90 km away or about 1 hours drive and is our closest airport. It is very well served with 6 flights a day from Gatwick and London Heathrow. In addition there are flights from Manchester and Bristol.

Tarbes Lourdes Airport is about 100km and is served by Ryanair from Stansted Airport.
