Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Kotor - Boka View

2 bedroom apartment in an ideal location, just footsteps from the sea

Where better to experience the true atmosphere of UNESCO World Heritage Perast than this sea-front apartment in a beautifully restored old-stone villa. With a private terrace jutting out into the sea, you can while away the hours sitting on the water’s edge and watching the world go by, or enjoy al fresco dining in what must be one Montenegro’s most romantic spots.

When you get tired of sitting right on the water’s edge and watching the world go by, the open plan interior is wonderfully cool in the summer and cosily warm in the winter due to the two-foot thick stone walls.

Perast is one of Montenegro’s most picturesque settlements, with pretty winding lanes and countless churches, backed by rugged cliffs and forested mountaintops.

A collection of grand merchant houses lie along the seafront, a remnant of the time when Perast was a prosperous Venetian-era trading town, lasting until the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797.

The town makes for an ideal base to explore the Bay of Kotor and beyond - you are only a short drive away from the spectacular walled city of Kotor, Tivat marina and the beaches of the Lustica peninsula.

About Michael

Having lived in Montenegro for five years now I know the coast quite well and absolutely love the relaxed lifestyle here. My favourite properties are right on the waterfront because I love swimming in the sea in the hot summer months.

Michael purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Michael chose Kotor

It has a lovely interior with some exposed brick on the walls and a good location.

What makes this apartment unique

It has stunning views and a lovely waterfront location in Perast which is pedestrianised in the summer.

When mariners of old used to return to the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorksa), they would give thanks for their safety with an offering dropped into the renowned harbour. Such offerings – sometimes an ornate figurine, sometimes just a stone – accumulated over the centuries and eventually broke the surface, or so the local legend goes.

The result is a small, vaguely boat-shaped island capped by a seventeenth-century Venetian baroque church: Gospa od Skrpjela, Our Lady of the Rocks. Next to it, on an older island, sits the sombre Orthodox monastery of Saint George.

These two little island-churches form the foreground for one of the prime jewels of the bay: the historic town of Perast, strategically sited to keep an eye in all the shipping passing in or out through the Vertiges straight. The narrow straight provides the only opening to one of the Mediterranean’s finest natural deep-water harbours.

The town – with its characteristic tall-spired churches and capacious stone houses for wealthy merchant families – bears the unmistakeable imprint of the Venetian seafaring empire that endured from the middle ages until 1797. Yet with steep cliffs and forested mountaintops rising up close behind, this could only be Montenegro.

In the entrepreneurial spirit of mercantile city-states, Perast – originally named for an ancient Illyrian tribe – inevitably arose as a local challenger to Kotor, the walled port town nestled deep at the back of the bay.

The legacy of the golden period is equally evident all around the connected bays of Kotor, Risan and Tivat; in towns like Prcanj, Morinj, Rezevici, Lepetane or Krasici, and in the numerous tiny hamlets dotted around the twisting shoreline. The best way to take in the area is by the charming open-air tour boat that runs daily between Tivat and Perast, with a stop at Our Lady of the Rocks.
