Overview

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday villa in Civitella d'Agliano - The Yellow House

Self-catering rental, ideal for families and exploring Lazio, Umbria

The Yellow House is a haven of peace and tranquillity in the heart of rural Italy, it is secluded, hidden in a valley and surrounded by mature trees and beautiful views. The villa itself is elegant and comfortable and perfect for self-catering holidays for family groups. Happy days can be spent enjoying the large private pool, exploring the 10 acres of land and fishing in the stream. For those who want to explore the area there is much to see including Lake Bolsena where you can swim, water ski, jet ski, explore the lake on pedelos and visit the beautiful island of Bisentina by boat. The city of Orvieto is only 40 minutes away and a visit will keep shoppers, historians and gastronomes happy all day long. Nearer home is the fascinating 'dying city' of Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town perched on the top of what remains of a an earthquake 300 years ago, and offers spectacular panoramic views.

Surrounding landscape: The large private swimming pool (5m x 15m) is situated on the side of a hill and below is the winding valley. The pool is secluded and peaceful. Around the perimeter of the pool is a mature rosemary bush providing a beautiful perfume in the evenings and fresh herbs for cooking. The marble patio is spacious with plenty of room for the 8 sunloungers. In the garden there are 3 large garden tables and outside seating for 20 people. There is a lantern in the oak tree which provides the perfect light for intimate suppers or large parties in the evening. There is a large pizza oven which is great fun to use for cooking pizzas, joints of meat etc. The garden is informal. and the area around the house has space to park several cars. There are plenty of places to explore on the land including 3 small caves and a stream at the end of the bottom field from where it is possible to fish for trout. We have one neighbour but neither of the houses are overlooked.

Eating and drinking : There are a wide variety of very good restaurants within driving distance of Civitella D'Agliano which cater for all needs including families. For specific details visit our website: Please contact us for the web site address. There are many local wines but the best known is the organic wine made by Sergio Mottura and his family who own the beautiful hotel La Tana dell'Istrice. If you are interested you may like to spend an evening with the Mottura family and their guests tasting wine, visiting the impressive wine cellars and finishing off with a delicious meal in their restaurant.

Cookery demonstrations. Learn how to make traditional dishes prepared in The Yellow House kitchen by a local chef. Guests can be involved in the preparation or just watch the experts at work. Enjoy the fruits of your labour accompanied by regional wines. The selection of dishes will vary depending on the best ingredients available. Contact Cristina for details of choices and price.

Things to do and see: If you enjoy shopping for local produce you may want to visit the markets, these are a typical feature of the local areas, the size of the markets vary depending on the town's importance. The markets usually start at 8am and finish at 1pm. On Monday there is a market in Bagnoregio, Tuesday in Bolsena Thursday and Saturday in Orvieto and a small market on Friday in Civitella d'Agliano. For those of you who enjoy golf 'La Querce' Golf Club is approximately 40 minutes drive away just south of Viterbo - 18 hole, par 72, 64262 meters. And those that ski -Mount Amiata is 60km from the house in Tuscany on the way to Siena (approximately a one hour drive). Although not on the door step it is possible to visit the resorts for day trips. There is good skiing at Prato della Contessa, Prato della Macinaie, Marsiliana and Cantore. Slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. For excellent local info 'Bolsena, Everything You Need to Know' by Fleur Kinson -

About e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy)

We live in Hertfordshire and have a teenage daughter.

We bought The Yellow House in 2002 and have always loved Italy, buildings and restoration. Some Italian friends have a property near Bolsena and after visiting the area we were struck by how unspoilt and beautiful it was.

e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) purchased this villa in 2002

Why e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) chose Civitella d'Agliano

Initially we looked at properties near Bolsena but could not find anything with enough seclusion or land. We broadened our search and came across several possibilities, The Yellow House was our favourite.

At the time the house was a ruin and we spent 2 years on the restoration. The project was great fun and we had lots of support from our now property manager, Kalle.

Parts of The Yellow House were renovated again in 2010. The main change is the kitchen which has been extended to form a much larger kitchen dining area with modern professional kitchen (30ft x 12ft).

What makes this villa unique

Secluded spot, beautiful views of valley, local area unspoilt by turism. Very close to local shops, restaurants and medieval village. Large private swimming pool. Outside pizza oven. Perfect base to explore Lazio, Umbria nd Tuscany.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Emma, Just to say what a lovely time we all had at the Yellow House from 26/7 to 2/8. It met all our hopes and expectations and we had such fun with the pool, the outside terrace, the games (scrabble and monopoly were favourites) and we played a very successful game of 'Sardines' - If you don't know it, it involves one hiding and the rest searching until the last one finds the hiding place where everyone else is holding their breath! The house affords many good hiding places! Kalle and the cooks who came in did us proud and for the rest we enjoyed the local produce home cooked. Lovely place. I'm sure you are so happy when there. Best wishes

The Best Value Holiday in Italy!

  • 5 out of 5
For the price, the Yellow House is simply staggering value! The villa is beautiful: spacious and very comfortable, with a kitchen even the most dedicated chef would die for! The pool is big and surrounded by comfortable beds. The Yellow House is situated in a beautiful spot, surrounded by magnificent countryside - here you'll find total peace and quiet. The village of Civitella D'Agliano is lovely: the church is magnificent. Near the villa you'll find restaurants serving superb Italian cuisine (eleven of us had a feast of fours courses each, plus six bottles of wine and brandy for 297 Euros in a nearby restaurant!) I'd avoid the Pizzeria next to the supermarket though: the service is terrible and the food tasted of salt when we went on a previous occasion. One other thing - the town of Balsano, next to the lake, is delightful, but the beach there was full of Italians and Germans incessantly talking on mobile phones. Why, we thought, are we here when we could be back at the Yellow House around the pool? The eleven of us divided into groups and had a 'Come Dine With Me' style competition: each night two or three of us would perpare the food, eaten on the magnificent table under the lantern-lit tree in the garden: on warm Umbrian evenings, what could be better? Oh, and the five-litre jars of red wine in the local supermarket is decent stuff and costs just over 7 Euros for the five litres - I'm ashamed to say the eleven of us got through seventy-five litres of it over ten days! All-in-all, the Yellow House is the perfect holiday. Go - it's impossible not to have the very best of times! James and others, Essex.

Owner's Response: Dear James, so glad you enjoyed your stay, I love the idea of your cooking competition and most impressed by your consumption of the local wine! The pizzaria next to the supermarket can vary but we have had lots of lovely meals there as well as the odd disappointment. We prefer to enjoy Lake Bosena from Capodimonte, there is lots of shade, a huge beach and an excellent restaurant on the beach (at the town end), you have to get there early as it fills up very quickly and then the sevice can be a problem. There is also a beautiful view of the lake if you take the anticlockwsie route to Capodimonte form the town of Bolsena. We hired peddalos and a speed boat last time from there last time which was great fun, you can hire canoes too. Thank you for sharing some of your holiday memories with us and I hope you'll come again.

Thank you to the Yellow House Management team

  • 5 out of 5
This is the place to stay. It was my fourth time staying at the Yellow House at the village of Civitella D'Agliano and on my return to the UK I booked next years as we all had a wonderful holiday.
The village is lovely: the church is magnificent, and the people so, so friendly, to fill the warmth of the villagers, I recommend the insomnia bar,
I strongly recommend the wine tasting evening in The Hotel Porcupoine's Lair, "La Tana dell'Istrice," right in the centre of town next to the village church, starting with a review of its seller, flowed by a 6 course meal with a different wine with for each course with a full explanation from the vineyards owner. (All for 50 euro’s)
Each night two or three of us would prepare the food, eaten on the magnificent table under the lantern-lit tree in the garden:
Another great night was when we asked Christina (House Manager) to arrange for a meal to be cooked for us at the Yellow House, once again a fantastic night with truly Italian food cook before your eye.
The pizza oven was very popular, we used it and I overcooked the pizza’s but it was fun trying, the pizza base was freshly made at the local bakers for one euro (which made three pizzas) there were plenty of logs supplied.
The Yellow House is the perfect holiday. Go - it's impossible not to have the very best of times!
Thank you Emma, for sharing your wonderful home with us again. Fabulous house! Amazing location! Great value! You need to add more stars to the ratings, my family would give it seven out of seven
Thank you again Emma and to your Yellow House Management team

Welcome Home!

  • 5 out of 5
This is the place to stay. It was my fourth time staying at the Yellow House and this time I traveled with my mother and my four siblings; all but one who had been there before. It is as the listing says; this is home! My family was once again pleased with everything and they were thrilled with the updated kitchen which we used almost daily, cooking some wonderful pasta dinners. We also used the wood-burning pizza oven and made some great pizzas. We traveled daily from the Yellow House, visiting Rome by train and driving to Siena, Orvieto, Deruta, Porto di San Stefano, Tivoli, Rionero Sannitico, Bagnoregio, and some great wineries. The train station at Orte makes travel easy and the close-by autobahn makes getting anywhere so quick. We stayed home a couple of days and enjoyed the sunshine and perfectly clear swimming pool and of course we enjoyed the market on both Fridays right in the center of Civitella d'Agliano. We finished our stay as always with a wonderful wine tasting and dinner at the Porcupoine's Lair, "La Tana dell'Istrice," right in the center of town. The house was clean and ready for us and the caretaker Cristina could not have been more attentive to us. The great thing about the Yellow House and Emma is that you always feel welcomed and at home. I look forward to my next visit in a year or two. Thanks Emma for opening up your home to my family and me once again!

Great family holiday

  • 5 out of 5
The villa is secluded and peaceful with superb scenery. Much bigger than we had anticipated and very comfortable and well equipped. The bath and shower rooms are excellent.
The pizza oven was very popular, we used it twice and there were plenty of logs supplied. The whole family (including our 20 month old granddaughter) had fun rolling out the dough and making up with chosen toppings.
The San Michelle restaurant nearby was also enjoyed; the food was good and the staff friendly.
The local bakery was very helpful in providing the dough for our pizzas. We didn't even have to order, we just bought it on the day.
Christina very kindly supplied our grocery order and we found The Yellow House quite easily following the excellent directions.
The Dying City as very impressive and Orvieto was another visit amongst others we enjoyed.
This was the first visit to Italy for some of us and we thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us.
All in all we had a marvellous holiday and hope to return one day.

Owner's Response: Dear Trisha, really glad that you enjoyed your stay at The Yellow House and hope you will return one day. Well done for mastering the pizza oven, not everyone does, we love making pizza but it has taken some time to perfect the skill, our latest attempts have been considerably more edible than the first!

Fabulous house! Amazing location! Great value!

  • 5 out of 5
This house is fantastic with the most beautiful pool, set in stunning scenery but close to the village. We loved the fact we could book a property of this size and quality for 6 of us - but with the option to add to the party if we chose. The 15 metre pool made the holiday for us- being able to swim properly in a holiday house pool is unusual! The rural location is perfect with spectacular views across the valley and all our meals were taken outside under the huge tree in front of the house The house is spacious, beautifully furnished with excellent shower/ bathrooms and an amazing kitchen! The pizza oven was great fun - ordering the pizza dough in the village bakery with little Italian vocab was hilarious !! The village has everything you need and only a mile away so easy to walk to the lovely square to share a glass of wine with the locals in the early evenings. The house is ideally located, only an hour or so from Rome, with easy access to many beautiful towns and cities in the region. Lake Bolsena is a must with Capodimonte the place to visit to enjoy fabulous fish cuisine in beautiful surroundings. I cannot recommend The Yellow House more highly. From the time of booking to when we left to come home the personal touch from the owners and Christine, the manager of the property in Italy, was the best we have ever had and makes booking a property for this type of holiday stress free. We are planning our next visit already!

Owner's Response: Dear Clare, So glad to hear that your trip to the Yellow House was a success and that you are planning your next trip. Would love to have been a fly on the wall at the bakery when you ordered your dough for the pizza oven! We love the 15m pool too, a few lengths before breakfast is very invigorating!

Ideal setting in a ideal location

  • 5 out of 5
When we originally found The Yellow House on the web, we fell in love with the whole look of the place....On arrival the House surpassed any idea that we expected of it.
This idealic setting was perfect for a family holiday , ranging from 6 years to 70...The house, grounds & pool were enjoyed by all, with plenty of family bbq gatherings at the excellently placed outdoor dining area, over looking the beautiful countryside..Plenty of friendly competitions of Table Football & Table Tennis, that were at our disposal.
The house itself was spotless on arrival, with Christina calling in to check we had everything we needed, & answering any questons that we may have had, aswell as cleaning the pool if required.
The nearby town was a mile away, lovely for early morning walks to the local square, where lattes & expressos were enjoyed every day.. Even down to the local pizza restuarant, where we had enjoyed many meals, the staff couldnt have been nicer & friendlier...Local supermarket was a mere few minutes by car, which stocked everything we needed for the week.
Nearby trips well worh reommendng were to Bolsena Lake & Civita Di Bagnoregio, less than an hr away.
The Yellow House & surrounding area, were everything you could wish for in an Italian Holiday, & well worth recommending to anyone.Hopefully a trip that we will make again very soon.

The villa is situated in the heart of wine-making countryside, it is the perfect place to relax and because of its unique location can be used as a base to explore Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The House is situated 15 minutes walk from the quiet, medieval village Civitella d’Agliano, in which there are several shops, a petrol station, a Banca di Roma and Post Office. Even nearer home is our local restaurant and a small supermarket. There are several other good restaurants in the area including at the beautiful Hotel La Tana dell’Istrice (the porcupine’s lair), where one can also taste wine from the impressive wine cellars. There is a pizzeria and several small bars. There are facilities for playing tennis, horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling, information can be found in the Town Hall (Comune). Bagnoregio is the nearest large town and is 15 minutes by car. Orvieto is 40 minutes drive away as is Lake Bolsena, see link to our website for further information.
