About Nigel

I have worked in the media industry traveling extensively in England and overseas staying in many fine hotels along the way. Although I had good experiences I never quite found my 'Shangri-La..a place to rest, feel at home in, but still feel its history, appreciate the art, the crackle of a log fire, alongside great design that can stimulate the senses and renew the spirit. Some of it I found but not altogether. I wanted to be in surroundings that could give me all of this in an honest and unpretentious manner..a place to simply Hang My Hat. The Cottage is my attempt to bring this dream alive and the last place I expected to find it in was my old home town of Winchester.

Nigel purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Nigel chose Winchester

I spent my childhood here and know the city well. Having returned after many years away I wanted to find a property that could make the Hang Your Hat concept happen. It is a beautiful brick and flint brewery workers cottage build in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, 1843. For a small cottage it has a tremendous sense of space with a magical courtyard garden overlooked by apple trees. It is in a quiet street in one of the oldest parishes of the city and yet just a short walk into the centre of town.. Even nearer are two great pubs The Hyde Tavern and Mucky Duck, fantastic walks, a Theatre, a Library and the train station to London. It ticked all the boxes.

Fantastic Christmas and New Year getaway

What can I say about this place?

Both my fiancee and I were so excited to stay at Hang Your Hat in Winchester. Even though I am originally from Winchester, I hadn't been back in a while and we had 10 days to reacquaint ourselves with this wonderful city, using Nigel's cottage as our base. The champagne and chocolates on arrival were very gratefully received and marked an ideal start to our stay.

We've stayed in many hotels around the world, but only Nigel's place truly felt like a 'home away from home.' We've never felt so welcomed by a host, as Nigel did. The cottage is littered with thoughtful touches and unique pieces of Winchester's history and the fireplace was perfect for evenings in front of the TV with a glass of wine or a tumbler of whisky.

Even though this is a traditional fisherman's cottage, it didn't feel confined in any way. There is a sense of space in the living areas and the floating staircase up to the bedroom and study helps add to this. The kitchen was perfect for my needs; I cooked quite a few meals using the awesome induction hob and oven.

The bathroom reminded me of being in the Middle East; the steam shower is a very cool feature and I only wish I had one at home now!

All in all, we had a relaxing, memorable time here and wouldn't hesitate to either recommend it to friends and family or stay here again when we are next in Winchester. Everything about this place is worth 5 stars.

Amazing homely, cosy cottage in great location

  • 5 out of 5
The Cottage was our home away from home for three weeks. We felt relaxed and comfortable as soon as we walked in. We had many evenings outside on the patio and also in front of the fire. The design and decor is excellent. We entertained several times and had friends stay at the weekends.

The location is great with a short walk into the centre of Winchester which is a fantastic city to visit with its history as well as shops, restaurants and pubs.

The trains station is 5 minutes away and we went up to London for the day twice - so easy.

We had a great holiday and look forward to staying again in 2014.

Five star confort!

  • 5 out of 5
I stayed in this wonderful cottage in Winchester for a week as a base to visit friends and family in the area. The location is simply second to none. It is literally 5 minutes walk to the lovely high Street of Winchester, along with some of the best restaurants, with a petrol station and Tesco Express 2 minutes in the other direction. All of this, yet on an extremely quiet road with no through traffic. The cottage is beautifully appointed - wonderful art on the walls, every mod con in the kitchen and bathroom, underfloor heating, high speed wifi throughout and probably the most luxurious bathrobe I have ever come across! The outside area is delightful with a great patio and long garden area. I really did feel completely at home - even the neighbour gave me some flowers from her garden for the house! And the champagne and chocolates on arrival were a lovely touch. There are two parking options - either permit or allocated space. I used the permit and didn't ever have problem finding a space in the surrounding roads, but some people may prefer the convenience of the space to save a drive around in the evening. I honestly wouldn't change a thing and will definitely be back.

A classy secret oasis in a beautiful historic town

  • 5 out of 5
when we arrived on sunday and was greeted by debbie one of the owners advisers she showed us around the cottage and made sure everything was satisfactory for our stay. The first night we just went to the local inns the mucky duck and hyde tavern both very different but most enjoyable customer service. After a good nights sleep we adventured around lovely winchester a tranquil oasis from everyday life. The cottage was a beautiful well maintained abode with luxury from the start we would recommend the sauna and evenings in the courtyard with your favourite tipple.I would like to thank Nigel for all his help throughout the week and would recommend this property to any travellers looking for a romantic hide a way .
