Stavros - Akrotiri: is a popular summer destination among the locals, because of its natural beauty. Stavros is 15km far from Chania and you can easily get there by car.
Akrotiri has few coastal resorts but some nice beaches which are popular at weekends with the inhabitants of Chania but fairly quiet during the week: Marathi, Kalathas and Stavros.
Stavros beach has a beautiful sandy circular cove, where 'Zorba the Greek' was filmed, a movie candidate for Oscar award, starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. It is a great spot for a relaxed stay next to the shallow water, which is great for children too. It is also pleasantly catered with umbrellas and sun beds. Located approximately 2km far from Vlamis Villas and 3km far from Villa Penelope and Villa Clio.
Historical information: Akrotiri also has a few monasteries which are becoming popular with visitors: the impressive Agia Triada was founded in the beginning of the 17th century and was a prominent religious school until about 40 years ago. About 4 km to the north of Agia Triada, there is Moni Gouverneto (Our Lady of the Angels) and it dates from the 16th century. The building itself is quite plain but the church inside has a nice sculpted Venetian façade.
