Wonderful vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolute wonderful stay at this place. The apartment is set in beautiful surroundings; in a quiet neighborhood and it has a lush garden with amazing flowers and waterfall view.

The place has all the amenities you need, proper kitchen, bathroom (with a lot of fresh towels) and washing machine.

Location is good; it takes only half an hour to drive to Hanalei Bay or to the south. Kapa'a is a great little seaside town.

The house owner Rick is is great! He is very friendly and helped us around. He even picked us up from the airport (and dropped us off again). We rented his SUV and he also provided us with boogie boards, beach chairs and snorkel gear.

We highly recommend this property!!!

This property is in serious need of updating. The pictures are misleading. The cottage upstairs is dark and very hot in spite of the ceiling fans, and the floor fan that the owner lent us was noisy and dirty. The kitchenette is hardly modern as stated. The refrigerator iced up, and there is only a single burner hot plate. The bath tub does not drain properly.

While there is equipment available, much is not clean or in good repair. The car we rented from the owner was dirty inside and out and delivered to us with almost no gas. As we were departing, the owner complained that we had not filled the tank.

While the views are beautiful, the cottage is next to the owner's home and therefore does not feel very private. Some of the outdoor furniture had not been cleaned in quite some time.

The owner kindly picked us up at the airport but almost immediately asked us how we were going to pay. He then spoke at length of a poor review of his property and of another set of renters that were problematic for him. We found these conversations off-putting.

There are some nice amenities, such as the use of the washer/dryer, a comfortable bed, and the presence of extra toiletries. Although the owners tried to be accommodating, overall our experience was disappointing, and we do not recommend it in its current condition, especially given the recent price increase.

Paradise found!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful place on the island of Kauai! We felt like in paradise - beautiful views from the lanai in the morning after waking up, singing birds, lizards on leaves surrounding greenery, beautiful mountains with waterfalls on the horizon ... On a clear night, we saw so many stars ... Accommodation at Rick and Dianne is only a few miles from Kapaa, so you can reach in a short time both the northern and the southern or western part of the island.

We had everything we needed. Was very comfortable and huge bed. Rick lent us surf boards.

I would also like to thank that have been granted a late check out, because the departure was at 23:14, and eventually was still delayed.

Rick and Dianne, believe that you live in paradise!

Thank you very much, mahalo. David, Eva, John and Adam T.

Owner's Response: Aloha,David. Your family was some of the best guests that we have ever had, And we've had lots of good ones. Your children were every bit as well mannered and she said they would be. Our only regret, Is we wish you would've stayed longer, and if we could just speak your language better. Thank you, Rick.

Wonderful Jungle Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, my 1-year-old and myself stayed in Rick's hale for just over a week. We stayed in his larger accommodation, the one on the bottom floor, it fit us well, with my son sleeping on the couch. Rick was a great host, he was thoughtful, accommodating, incredibly knowledgable about the island and super quick to respond to my requests.

The neighbourhood is beautiful and quiet. The property is gorgeous, all of the plants around you truly give you the feeling that you're in the jungle of Kauai--a magical place to be. The location is great too, far enough away from the highway, but close enough that restaurants, shopping and a beautiful beach are just a 10 minute drive away. It was a great location with a view of the mountains and waterfalls.

The hale is clean, well-appointed and full of amenities. The bed is extremely comfortable and the kitchen had more than everything we needed. The satellite TV also came in handy, since we were rained in some afternoons and mornings.

We will definitely check Rick's hale first when we come back to Kauai... There's no way we can stay away from Kauai.

Beautiful grounds, nice house, not stocked

  • 4 of 5

The grounds are far more beautiful than the pictures. The view of the falls is wonderful first thing in the morning. There are two separate rentals here - the studio pictured extensively and the hale pictured in only a few of the pictures. We were squeezing two adults and two kids into the house, so it was a tight fit. We had access to two roll away beds that the kids slept on, so they slept in the kitchen which they loved! The property is private and only about 10 minutes from downtown Kapa'a. If you plan to visit many parts of Kauai, be warned that you will spend a lot of time in the car from this area. The two things that keep me from giving this an excellent rating are this: 1. the house is not stocked as advertised. There were no condiments, nothing in the fridge at all, no leftover spices, no oil, nothing. Not even a salt shaker (but there was pepper). There were some coffees from a hotel, intended to be brewed in a hotel coffee maker. Lucky, we had some instant with us since Rick told us to come to the house before going to the store so that we could "see what they had". The kitchen is not what I personally would call well equipped (I cook all the time). There is a set of silverware. There are some very cheap Teflon pans (they literally fall over from the weight of the handle when you set them down), a pot that looks as if it was once Teflon, but is not anymore. The blender stinks, it could not even blend up garlic in salad dressing. One floppy spatula (I tried to buy some flexible ones, but couldn't find any on the island). It is advertised that there are towels, but when we asked about specific beach towels to be considerate and not ruin the ones in the house, Rick's wife told us their beach towels were torn up and that we could buy some for $8 at the store. Um. It says that there is all the equipment you would need - which is of course a draw because it increases the value of the rental. There are two algaed snorkels (from the moisture in the area), a few fins, ,no boogie boards, and two serviceable beach chairs. 2. To be a tour guide and realtor, Rick was not accessible during our visit. He gave us dxns to the falls, but when I told him specifically that we had some questions about what to do, we did not see him for the next three days. And lastly, it is not clear from the listing that it is underneath Rick's living space so you can hear every step, every chair dragged, the dog walking on the porch, toilets and many conversations.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your four-star rating. We strive to get 5 stars so we appreciate your input. We realize we cannot satisfy hundred percent of the people 100% of time. I would like to compensate by offering you a free night with your next visit. As far as Scooter (little Shitzu) walking on the deck above,I had no idea that would be any inconvenience. We did have a young couple that I let stay for quite a while, and found things broken and missing. Therefore I went to check everything out, to find that those pots and pans are a brand-new set that I bought recently, and the blender works excellent. The problem is the bottom part that is like a gear and connects to the base, was upside down. So the blade was with the gear should be in the gear was doing the grinding on your garlic. I really appreciate the heads up though, because that reminds me that I should buy a food processor, for grinding and chopping vegetables. That's not really a blender's job. I tried to make myself available any time that I was not out working. I showed you where all of the quality snorkel equipment was, and offered you to use the scuba bucket to carry them in, so you could clean them after each use. Evidently, lots of people are not doing that. I guess if I charged at least a deposit, they probably would clean them. it's my mistake that I didn't point out the 6 boogey boards and 4 bicycles, that are all free to use. We have these huge beach towels, that I just decided to quit using, because they were breaking our washers and dryers. Way overkill. In talking with other B&B owners, face tell me that the $5 Beach towels at the ABC store, are what all the guests love to use and take home with them. They're made for Hawaii living. You take this up well I hope on a free night stay, and certainly would like to make sure everything is up to your expectations.Mahalo,Nui Loa .Rick.

Great vacation rental!

  • 5 of 5

Rick and Diane's place was perfect for our vacation on Kauai. The location, approx. 5 mins from Kapaa town/multiple beaches and restaurants, was exactly what we wanted. The Hale was exactly what we wanted, a nice, affordable location, away from the crowds at the resorts and "real" Kauai feel. The lanai was fantastic, the full kitchen provided everything we needed to save a few bucks at eat there a couple times, the living/dining/bed rooms were adequate and all we needed. The value is superb! Rick and Diane were great hosts, it was a huge benefit at no cost that he provided snorkeling gear and boogie boards! Definitely recommend if you are looking for a secluded (but close to town) location, great value, beautiful scenery and great hospitality!
