Salmon and Trout Fishing West River: The West river has numerous swimming and fishing holes, and is enjoyed by boating enthusiasts in summer and ice skaters in winter. Many of the rivers tributaries are home to Brook and Brown Trout and are important nurseries for Atlantic Salmon fry, which are stocked annually as part of the Federal Governments Atlantic Salmon Reintroduction Program. In the fall of 1998, Fish and Wildlife biologists discovered six salmon redds, or nests, in Newfane and Townshend. The West River is considered to be one of Vermont's premier Atlantic Salmon restoration rivers, and is an 'area of special focus' within the Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.
