Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Skibbereen - The Phoenix

4 bedrooms, 1 with ensuite shower and toilet, plus family bathroom. Sleeps eight

The Phoenix is situated in the beautiful village of Castletownshend on the South West coast of Ireland. The cottage comprises a large hall, a lounge with an open fire (also central heating throughout) and doors to a secluded garden from the dining area. There are four bedrooms. The two bathrooms, (one ensuite) with showers, were renovated in 2010. Bedroom 1 with ensuite shower and toilet has 5' double bed. Bedroom 2 has two single beds. Bedroom 3 has a double bed. Bedroom 4 has 3' wide bunk beds.

The cottage is tastefully furnished. It has slate and wood floors downstairs and new (2013) carpet upstairs. There is a HiFi system with iPod doc, CD/DVD player, and a 32' flat screen TV with all the Irish and British TV and radio channels, and some Satellite channels. The cottage contains a new cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. WiFi has recently been installed..

Pebble beaches are 5 mins walk, sandy beach a 5 mins drive. Village has a shop and two pubs, one with a highly recommended restaurant.

Castletownshend harbour is popular with the sailing community. Mary Ann's Bar and the village shop has many flyers advertising sea and lake fishing, sailing, and whale watching trips. The staff in both places are helpful. Skibbereen has a tourist information office.

The village shop is two doors away from the Phoenix. Fresh food and newspapers are delivered daily.

There are many beautiful walks in the area: coastal, woodland and rural - go from the Phoenix on foot or take the car.

Glandore (10 kilometers away) set in a sheltered bay has two pub/ restuarants where you can sit and admire the view.

Baltimore (20 kilometers away) is lively with restaurants, seasports, pubs and ferries to offshore islands.

The South West attractions of the Mizen Head, Barley Cove, Crookhaven, Glengarriff, Gouganbarra, the Healy Pass and Ahillies, and even Killarney, can be visited in a day. Many stunning gardens and picturesque walks can be visited in these places.

Live music can sometimes be found in Castletownshend village pubs. And regular music sessions are available in Skibbereen, Clonakity, Baltimore and further afield.

About Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone)

I bought this house during a wet week one summer in Ireland soon after I returned to England from working abroad for 4 years. I currently live with my husband in London, where I grew up. I retired 6 years ago from the Financial Services industry and have just completed a B.A. in History.

Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone) purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone) chose Skibbereen

I started coming to my grandmother's house in the country area around Castletownshend when I was 8 years old and have visited almost every year since. Since buying the Phoenix my husband and I come several times a year, often bringing friends and family.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the unique character of Castletownshend, its history, the village community, friendly neighbours, a shop two doors away, great pubs and excellent restaurant; and a 2 minute walk to 3 beaches or quays in the village. We do a lot of walking in the area, just following paths on the O.S. maps or using walking guides from the Tourist Office.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have stayed at this property twice. The whole process of booking, arrival, departure etc was very easy, with both the owner and housekeeper being very helpful. The property is as described, with a lovely big living ~/ dining room in particular, and is generally well equipped. The garden and patio are simple, but well maintained and lovely on sunny days.

Fishing Village Cottage

  • 5 out of 5
With my son,daughter-in-law and niece, I spent a wonderful week in Castletownsend, mid-way through our three week vacation. The location was a perfect base for our explorations of Cork and Kerry Counties, yet far enough away from crowded tourist locations to allow us to feel part of the friendly neighborhood. We all really appreciated the feeling of belonging, which made the visit a lot of fun.
While planning for this summer's trip to Ireland, we all agreed that the owner described a property and area that would be a perfect answer to our diverse preferences.
The "cottage" exceeded our expectations. The large home offered every amenity and both the owner and local property agent were very easy to work with. The nearby pubs and small store would have made it possible to spend the entire week in the village without leaving had we not been a more adventurous group with a need to explore as much as possible.
While sharing trip photos with friends and relatives, most askd how we found such a chaming place and I recommended a visit to the website.

Wonderful find - holiday heaven

  • 5 out of 5
The Pheonix is fabulous - we found it clean and well equipped. Next door to the shop, near pubs - a central location to explore the village and coast. It's really spacious with a lovely bright and airy feel to it.

Fabulous for cooking and dining as the kitchen is so well kitted out. We really utilised all the space - big cooking and dining, then evenings spent in the lounge area for music, reading or games.

The patio off the dining area opens onto a big secluded patio and beyond a raised lawned garden. We used the garden most days and enjoyed some great BBQs.

The reception room has tons of space for coats, boots, washing and drying, we had children with us, and had plenty of room to spread out!

Our boys played and read in their bedrooms while we made dinner. Lovely fresh rooms, simply decorated, with the Comfiest of beds - I loved having an ensuite off the main bedroom.

We founds loads of local walks, loved Skibereen - (the nearest town) with good pubs, shops, cafes, etc. Lots of local live music and things to see and do.

This house will be really cosy in Autumn or Winter, l can just picture lighting the fire and nestling down in the lounge after a long walk for a cosy evening in.

Mmmmmm I wonder if The Pheonix is free for Christmas? I Can't wait to visit again - I could move in and stay forever

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review. Yes it I free for Christmas ( and New Year) in 2013 as we cannot be there this year, which is a shame for us.

Holiday in Castletownshend

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for four nights and couldn't have asked for a more pleasant weekend. The location was fabulous for a nice break away from the hustle bustle of city life. The local pub (Mary Ann's) is a five minute walk away and they serve the best meals (fresh local seafood). The other pub (Lil Mccarthy's) is only two minutes. The locals are so friendly.

We went for a walk to several beaches and there is an abundance of sightseeing drives all along the coast including boat rides to the islands.

The town of Skibereen is only 8km away with several shops and eating establishments.

The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and all the amenities of
home. I definitely give this one of my best holiday destinations and would go back and recommend it to friends and family.

A most wonderful home in Castletowsend

  • 5 out of 5
I have had the privilege of staying in this fantastic house over the past 20 years. It is a much loved and cared for second home, which reflects in the excellent standard of furnishing and fittings. Cosy central heating and the open fire enhance the warm reception the house has, whatever the season. The open plan living area lends itself admirably to the many long dinner parties, or the inevitably lazy morning breakfasts.
Ideally situated in one of the most beautiful villages in Ireland, it is a short(hill) walk to the wonderful bar and restaurant called Mary Anne's, run by the legend that is Fergus!
The coastline is absolutely stunning and the oft refreshing breeze blowing away the cobwebs and lifting the soul.
A jewel in the crown of SW Cork.

I can strongly recommend a holiday staying at this lovely welcoming property in Castletownsend. Situated conveniently for local facilities, two great pubs, the quay and the castle. A confortable, modern and yet character - filled property, you will enjoy your time here. Well stocked kitchen, two bathrooms and a large dining/living area, the Phoenix is the ideal place to stay for a holiday in County Cork. Local inhabitants are friendly and helpful.

Great Cottage

  • 5 out of 5
We have just returned from a week in the the cottage. It is a great place to stay, we where very comfortable there. The village is great with some very nice pubs, more like front rooms of someone's house that a pub! No problems with running out of bread, milk etc, as the village shop is two doors down!
We travelled via the Swansea - Cork Ferry, which suited us as it is overnight both ways, the only point on the ferry - take cash, they had lots of problems with the PDQ machines both ways.
The cottage is highly recommended.

The 52 mile drive from Cork ferry or airport takes approximately one and half hours on the main N71 road. The drive passes through beautiful countryside and lovely Irish towns and villages, such as Clonakilty and Ross Carbery. A longer drive can be taken along the coast visiting Kinsale and beautiful Irish seaside bays and inlets such as Glandore.

Castletownshend is the most Anglo Irish village in Ireland with the best sheltered harbour in West Cork. It's origins date back to the 17th century so fine Georgian houses are mixed with stone cottages. It has retained a village atmosphere with a shop and two pubs, one of which serves excellent meals. There is a public tennis court and children's playground within a 3 minute walk from the Phoenix. There are three separate quays within a 5 minute walk, all with beach access to the sea. Larger sandy beaches are 2 miles away.

Castletownshend, including the Phoenix, is now on Google StreetView.
