Photos and Description of this 7 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Saxlingham Nethergate - The Old Hall
Luxurious With A Relaxed Family Feel - Sleeps 12 adults and 4 children
Featured in The Independent as one of the 50 best British breaks - October 13.
Stunning Elizabethan country house set in 17 acres on the edge of a Norfolk conservation village. Spacious and luxurious with a relaxed family feel this proper country house is perfect for family parties, celebrations, get-togethers or just getting away from it all.
We offer The Old Hall on a self catering basis but can offer a full range of catering options ranging from a waitress served dinner cooked on site by a Michelin rated chef through to freshly cooked fish and chips to eat in the garden or around a roaring fire depending upon the season.
There is lots to see and do in the area but if you prefer to stay closer to home we can arrange a host of activities to suit all ages in our extensive grounds - archery, shooting, bush craft for kids, tennis lessons.
If you prefer to organise your own fun there is plenty to do both outside or in with woods to explore, dens to build and cupboards full of family games to suit all ages. There is tennis and croquet for the competitive or if you prefer to be pampered a Champneys trained beauty therapist can visit the house.
We sleep up to 16 in 7 bedrooms arranged as follows:
3 very large super-king / doubles with en-suites, 2 with dressing rooms
funky attic dorm sleeping 4 - full sized beds but more suited to children / teenagers
family bathroom plus extra loo
We also have two additional loos downstairs.
All beds have Egyptian cotton linen and we provide White Company shower gels and soaps.
We can provide travel cots and have 2 additional 'put up beds' available on request.
You enter the house through the original oak studded front door which leads to the Great Hall with a beautiful 17th Century oak inlaid fireplace. This is an incredibly atmospheric room especially when lit by candle light in the evening. Our main dining table is here.
There are 3 more reception rooms including the drawing room with an enormous 15th Century open fireplace, the panelled yellow sitting room with French windows leading to the croquet lawn and a very large sitting room overlooking the gardens with French windows leading to the terrace.
Additionally there is a small library and a housekeepers sitting room which has been turned into a children's chill out room with easy access to an enclosed courtyard.
The large country style kitchen has a 4 oven Aga, seating for 6 and an extensive range of cookery books.
As you would expect there is a laundry room, a traditional pantry and a boot room.
Two staircases lead to the first floor. The master bedroom suite - with a super-king bed has spectacular views over the gardens and comprises both a shower room and a bathroom / dressing room.
There are two large additional bedrooms of historical interest - a double and a super-king - both with en-suite bathrooms along with a twin bedded room and a room containing an original 17th Century four poster bed.
On the third floor there is a double room with an original French bed, a family bathroom and an attic room with a children's dorm sleeping up to 4 - these are full sized beds with good quality mattresses but the decor is slightly funky and is really aimed at children / teenagers.
Also located in the attic is a home cinema with chaises, bean bags, an extensive DVD library and of course popcorn!

Guestbook comments from the owner
I have recently returned from the most amazing birthday weekend in this wonderful house.
To say I was not looking forward to my BIG birthday was an understatement! Unbeknown to me my family booked this wonderful house and turned my dreaded birthday into a wonderful celebration.
We arrived on the Friday to be met by Janine (the owner) and she gave us the warmest of welcomes, the weather was chilly but the house was warm and had the most lovely ambiance with the sun shining in the leaded windows. Such a beautiful house and far more perfect than any 5* hotel. The kitchen with the aga was the hub of the house and when we arrived there was fizz in the fridge with a tray of champagne flutes, plus a tray set for tea (milk in the fridge) complemented by a beautiful cake.
We are a family of 9 adults and 2 children, ages ranging from 70 to 5 and it suited us all. Lots for the children to do, they loved the playroom and playing tennis with the adults on the tennis court. There is also a pool and a pool house, although only open in the summer. The grounds are magnificent and home to peacocks and chickens. Do try the fresh eggs for breakfast, so yummy. There are so many rooms in the house, do look at the website and if you book this house you will not be disappointed.
I had a surprise party in the big hall and my family arranged caterers(Bespoke) who were excellent and I must give them a mention as their service was above and beyond and I would highly recommend them.
I think over the course of the weekend we used most rooms and lit the open fires, this has to be the most relaxing place my husband and I have ever stayed in, of course my children together with their husbands, wives, partners did all the organising making this the best 70th birthday weekend ever but they certainly got it spot on when they booked The Old Hall at Saxlingham, Nethergate
We moved to The Old Hall in 2000 with an eighteen month old, a nine month old and a chocolate lab. We set about restoring the house following the chaos caused by the previous owners who had 13 dogs in the kitchen, a barn owl in a dressing room and 2 monkeys living in a bedroom!
Our children are now at school in North Norfolk and we've moved to be closer. As we also have a house in Corfu which we rent out to guests it seemed the natural thing to offer this house too - see listing 411698 or www.annalena-corfu.com
One of the very special things about The Old Hall is that it has remained largely unchanged since it was built in 1625 and we knew that it offered the canvas to create a wonderful family home.
This is a genuinely historic house oozing original features - the lands were part of the divorce settlement from Henry VIII to Ann of Cleeves and The Old Hall was reputedly considered as a home by both Prince Edward and Madonna - yet it is relaxed, friendly and, as it always has, really comes to life when full of people.
It is a warm and friendly house and offers a fantastic backdrop for a celebration or get together.
