QUINTESSENTIAL ELIZABETHAN COUNTRY HOUSE, MAGICAL GARDENS AND POOL

Photos and Description of this 7 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Saxlingham Nethergate - The Old Hall

Luxurious With A Relaxed Family Feel - Sleeps 12 adults and 4 children

Featured in The Independent as one of the 50 best British breaks - October 13.

Stunning Elizabethan country house set in 17 acres on the edge of a Norfolk conservation village. Spacious and luxurious with a relaxed family feel this proper country house is perfect for family parties, celebrations, get-togethers or just getting away from it all.

www.theoldhall.net

We offer The Old Hall on a self catering basis but can offer a full range of catering options ranging from a waitress served dinner cooked on site by a Michelin rated chef through to freshly cooked fish and chips to eat in the garden or around a roaring fire depending upon the season.

There is lots to see and do in the area but if you prefer to stay closer to home we can arrange a host of activities to suit all ages in our extensive grounds - archery, shooting, bush craft for kids, tennis lessons.

If you prefer to organise your own fun there is plenty to do both outside or in with woods to explore, dens to build and cupboards full of family games to suit all ages. There is tennis and croquet for the competitive or if you prefer to be pampered a Champneys trained beauty therapist can visit the house.

We sleep up to 16 in 7 bedrooms arranged as follows:

3 very large super-king / doubles with en-suites, 2 with dressing rooms

2 doubles

1 twin

funky attic dorm sleeping 4 - full sized beds but more suited to children / teenagers

family bathroom plus extra loo

We also have two additional loos downstairs.

All beds have Egyptian cotton linen and we provide White Company shower gels and soaps.

We can provide travel cots and have 2 additional 'put up beds' available on request.

You enter the house through the original oak studded front door which leads to the Great Hall with a beautiful 17th Century oak inlaid fireplace. This is an incredibly atmospheric room especially when lit by candle light in the evening. Our main dining table is here.

There are 3 more reception rooms including the drawing room with an enormous 15th Century open fireplace, the panelled yellow sitting room with French windows leading to the croquet lawn and a very large sitting room overlooking the gardens with French windows leading to the terrace.

Additionally there is a small library and a housekeepers sitting room which has been turned into a children's chill out room with easy access to an enclosed courtyard.

The large country style kitchen has a 4 oven Aga, seating for 6 and an extensive range of cookery books.

As you would expect there is a laundry room, a traditional pantry and a boot room.

Two staircases lead to the first floor. The master bedroom suite - with a super-king bed has spectacular views over the gardens and comprises both a shower room and a bathroom / dressing room.

There are two large additional bedrooms of historical interest - a double and a super-king - both with en-suite bathrooms along with a twin bedded room and a room containing an original 17th Century four poster bed.

On the third floor there is a double room with an original French bed, a family bathroom and an attic room with a children's dorm sleeping up to 4 - these are full sized beds with good quality mattresses but the decor is slightly funky and is really aimed at children / teenagers.

Also located in the attic is a home cinema with chaises, bean bags, an extensive DVD library and of course popcorn!

We moved to The Old Hall in 2000 with an eighteen month old, a nine month old and a chocolate lab. We set about restoring the house following the chaos caused by the previous owners who had 13 dogs in the kitchen, a barn owl in a dressing room and 2 monkeys living in a bedroom!

Our children are now at school in North Norfolk and we've moved to be closer. As we also have a house in Corfu which we rent out to guests it seemed the natural thing to offer this house too - see listing 411698 or www.annalena-corfu.com

Janine Price purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

One of the very special things about The Old Hall is that it has remained largely unchanged since it was built in 1625 and we knew that it offered the canvas to create a wonderful family home.

This is a genuinely historic house oozing original features - the lands were part of the divorce settlement from Henry VIII to Ann of Cleeves and The Old Hall was reputedly considered as a home by both Prince Edward and Madonna - yet it is relaxed, friendly and, as it always has, really comes to life when full of people.

It is a warm and friendly house and offers a fantastic backdrop for a celebration or get together.

Simply Fantastic

  • Review Submitted: 08-Mar-2014

Not being able to decide on a venue for Christmas, we opted to bring our family together on neutral soil. Out of all the places we looked at, ranging from the Scottish Highlands to the French coast, we couldn't have picked a better place than The Old Hall.

From the very beginning, Janine and her team went above and beyond what we expected from them, never settling for 'just' fulfilling our wishes but continuously taking an extra step to ensure the best possible experience. Events were smoothly put together and additional requests such as catering, seamlessly coordinated.

The Old Hall itself is a magnificent and wonderful house, full of beautiful period features and tasteful decoration, all of which makes one feel at home from the very first step across its doors. Katy's warm welcome upon arrival further added to this experience and the delicious mince pies/welcome gifts made us want to stay on forever.

Its grounds are stunning and we are definitely planning on coming back in spring to see the flowers in full blossom.

Finally, let us not forget to mention the fact that we were accompanied by eight dogs, whom Janine and her staff kindly welcomed, trustingly, with open arms.

Thank you all so much for this relaxing and lovely experience!

Absolutely fantastic, we didn't want to leave

The Old Hall looks both big and beautiful in the pictures online, but there are no pictures to demonstrate just how incredible this house is in real life!

There is so much space and the house is well equipped with enough, beds, chairs, cutlery, crockery etc. for everyone (not to mention rooms!).

We are a mixed group ageing 25-30 and we had a brilliant time at the house. There is so much to do in the house, including tennis, DVDs and games as well as lots to do nearby if you have a car.

Janine and Katy (the housekeeper) were so welcoming and accommodating.
During our stay, we had a meal provided by Ethnic Fusion which I strongly recommend. The food was brilliant and the service impeccable.

I could go on about how great it was, but instead, you should go and see for yourself!

“Fabulous second stay”

  • Review Submitted: 22-Jan-2014

Over a year ago we first hired the Old Hall and had such a fantastic experience, we booked it again for the following year. We weren't disappointed. It's a fabulous house, with beautiful gardens set up to easily accommodate a party of 16 people. WE absolutely love the place, and intend to book it again. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

A privilege to have experienced a weekend here

  • Review Submitted: 13-Oct-2013
  • Date of Stay: Aug 2013
Sixteen family and friends celebrated my 40th birthday at The Old Hall, age range from 4 months to 60+ years and we ALL had a wonderful time!

The house and grounds are truly amazing. The kids (and big kids) were in and out of the pool, we played cricket on the lawn, had a game of tennis, explored the grounds, toasted marshmallows in the fire pit in the woods and the list goes on. The garden pavilion was a great place for us all to relax in the day and evening.

Janine couldn't have given us a warmer welcome and although we had a small problem with the hot water this was swiftly sorted for us.

To sum it up, the children absolutely loved the dorm where 4 of them slept especially as that's where the cinema screen was!! And the adults enjoyed spending time together in a unique, comfortable and atmospheric home. So many little touches made for a very memorable break

Superb Venue for Family 60th Wedding Anniversary

  • Review Submitted: 17-Sep-2013
  • Date of Stay: Aug 2013
I am very pleased to write a review regarding the Old Hall which was booked for a 60th Wedding Anniversary this August for a family of 14 with ages ranging from 12 to 80+, and with a further 5 arriving for day 2. Expectations were high, in line with the information provided, and I am delighted to say that my expectations were exceeded.

From the first glimpse of this beautiful, generously-proportioned house, I knew it would be a winner. The accommodation was perfect, from the eye catching entrance hall, to the attractive wood-panelled dining room; the well-equipped, homely kitchen: the many parlours and snugs here, and the fun nooks and crannies, there. and then on to the tastefully-appointed bedrooms, all, yes, all, just oozed comfort, quaintness and charm.

Additionally, the grounds were superb, with the extensive lawns, fabulous trees, swimming pool, tennis courts, orchard, topiary and surprises like - peacocks, chickens and rabbits pottering happily about quite unperturbed by our presence.

Ms Price, Janine, was asked to suggest some activities for our stay and did mastermind an amazing river trip on The Broads, with champagne and delicious refreshments, an excellent celebratory evening meal, using the in-house caterers, a buffet meal on our second day followed by an archery session employing an first-rate coach who inspired both the young and not young to take part, and then to cap it all a further meal that evening. We were delighted with the attention we received; Janine certainly has an eye for detail and did everything in her her power to ensure that our stay would be the huge success it was.

I have no hesitation in unreservedly recommending the Old Hall as a most delightful venue.
