COTTAGE LANDEWS MEADOW COTTAGES (BOTH COTTAGES): 5 BEDROOMS, SLEEPS 12

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday cottage in Charing - Landews Meadow Cottages

Spacious 3 bed and romantic 2 bed cottage with exposed beams and panoramic views

Located within the private Landews estate we have two well appointed picturesque country cottages with fantastic high quality fittings and facilities. Set in the beautiful village of Challock in central Kent, our location provides an ideal base for enjoying Kent's attractions and countryside. Also conveniently located for day trips to London (via the high speed train from Ashford to St Pancras in 38 minutes) or to France via Le Shuttle or the Ferries.

Surrounded by open fields and woodland which are alive with wildlife (you will see more pheasants, rabbits, woodpeckers and partridge than you will cars).

Hop cottage has its own private garden with large lawns and country cottage flower beds, a gas BBQ and patio table and chairs provide idyllic al fresco dining. From the private garden guests can access the natural swimming lake to enjoy a fresh water dip surrounded by reeds, bull rushes and water lillies with the swallows and dragon flies in the air above, and our family of moor hens for company. With many bridleways and footpaths to explore you can unwind and relax in one of the most idyllic unspoilt spots in Kent.

Hop cottage is named after the estates heritage as a former Hop farm and has wooden cladding outside and a Kent peg tile roof.

Oak cottage is constructed from the timbers of an old Oak framed barn. Oak cottage has two private terraces and access to the swimming lake and communal grounds.

The Landews Estate provides an ideal location for a lazy or an active holiday, relax around the lake on loungers, or explore all that the 'Garden of England' has to offer. Brogdale Farm which is home of the national fruit collection is only 5 miles away. On your doorstep at Landews you can go walking, bird watching, mountain biking, horse riding, gliding or walk to Beech Court Gardens and Tea Rooms.

All of Kents other attractions are within easy reach from our central location, one of our favorites is the RH&D Light Railway, a miniature steam railway that runs across Romney marsh from Hythe to Dungeness, great fun for little kids and big kids. Alternatively, Port Lympne and Howlett's Wild Animal Parks provide a great day out for the whole family. No visit to Kent would be complete without a day in Canterbury visiting the Cathedral or doing the ghost tour and a trip to Leeds Castle.

A walk along the White cliffs of Dover followed by a trip to Dover castle provide an excellent day out with two of Kent's iconic landmarks.

However you spend your days what better way to end it than enjoying a BBQ beside the natural swimming lake or having a relaxing dip where all you can hear is bird song.

The cottage provides all the charm of a past era combined with spacious modern facilities in what we believe is one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

We look forward to welcoming you.

About Nigel and Wendy Griffiths

Nigel and Wendy grew up in Kent and have always had an interest in travel and tourism. Having traveled extensively we know what makes a property and a holiday special and we have tried to provide that in our properties. Wendy has an eye for detail and cleanliness so you can be assured the cottages are well maintained and clean.

Nigel and Wendy Griffiths purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Nigel and Wendy Griffiths chose Charing

We moved back to Kent in 2012 after 20 years away and after viewing many properties we fell in love with Landews the moment we saw it. Properties in locations like this come up very rarely so we had to fight off two existing buyers and complete in 1 month to secure this as our home.

What makes this cottage unique

Landews enjoys a beautiful rural location, surrounded by fields and woodlands. It was built as an ECO property in 1978 mainly over 1 floor so it maintains a very low key cottage feel from all angles. The village of Challock is pretty with very friendly locals, a lovely green and two good pubs. It's central location allow you to get anywhere in Kent in around half an hour.

Fantastic holiday cottages!

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed in Hop cottage which was a large 3 bed cottage. There was 3 adults and 3 children, aged 8, 3 and 3. From the moment we arrived we were amazed with this house. It was very well furnished with amazing little touches like DVD player, Wii, DVDs which suited both adults and children and books for both adults and children. There were also children's board games. Outside was a maze of 'secret gardens', named by the children! There were swings and slides, outdoor lake. It was one if the most relaxing holidays we had. There is so much activities in the surrounding areas to keep any family busy! The other cottage was occupied by more of our family and the only problem was bats nested at this cottage a d a couple managed to get it which is why I gave overall score of 4/5 stars however Hop cottage deserves 5/5. The people who rented the cottages went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They even brought the kids to feed the pigs and chickens. They showed them the baby chicks which they were amazed with! We will definitely return! I would highly recommend this quite cottage for any family!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review of our cottages.
We are very glad that you found the cottages, our estate and all the little extras to your liking. We have had the bat conservation group out who have helped us to manage the bats so that they are not harmed but will no longer fly in through windows, so we are assured they will not cause similar concerns to future guests

A great stay at Landews Meadow cottages.

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed 4 nights at Landews Meadow cottages in Challock with a family of 6 adults and 5 children. The two cottages have separate entries, but the larger one of the two was spacious enough to accomodate the whole group for meals or just sitting together. The cottages were clean and well furnished. The owners live on the same property, in a separate cottage, which is practical.
The owners were very friendly. They even proposed to provide for food from the local shop before our arrival, so that we had the basics to have dinner at arrival.
The cottages have a great view on the meadows and woodland around and there's a very nice garden with a swimming pond and a raft. The children enjoyed playing with the horses in the meadows around the cottages, helping Nigel, the owner, collect wood and riding with him on the tractor.
Challock is very well situated to visit Canterbury, the historic dockyard at Chatham, castles and gardens of Kent, Folkestone, ... .
A great suggestion from Nigel for dinner a few miles from Challock in the direction of Ashford: the Flying Horse Inn. Delicious and great value for money (unless you really want very large quantities).
We can certainly recommend these holiday cottages and would not hesitate to book again.
A family from Belgium.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 out of 5
We booked both cottages for the weekend and were thrilled with our choice. The owners could not have been friendlier and we had a wonderful time. All 12 of us were very comfortable in the immaculate, comfortable and homely cottages, 2 of us swam in the lake (February), 8 of us enjoyed a stroll around the neighbouring fields, said hello to the ponies, 4 of us played table tennis in the garden, and all 12 of us would love to return. The cottages, location, facilities; everything surpassed our expectations and we would wholeheartedly recommend these cottages.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have you all stay recently at Landews Meadow and we are very glad you all enjoyed your birthday celebrations and your stay. You must need your heads testing for swimming in the lake at this time of year, but the water is beautifully clear if a little bracing! We look forward to welcoming you all back in the future.

Challock Village
Car: recommended

Challock is centrally located between Canterbury, Ashford and Faversham and is one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas of mid Kent. The village is surrounded on all sides by woodland with 'Kings Wood' to the East and Longbeech wood to the west. Chaucer's famous Pilgrims Way and the North Downs Way are just to the south of the village and can be accessed on foot with the adventurous being able to follow this to Canterbury. The village of Wye with it's chalk crown and the 'Devils Kneading Trough' are 4 miles away. Eastwell Manor is just one of a number of first class restaurants offering fine dining on your doorstep.

Challock's location in the heart of Kent provides an ideal base for exploring all of the Garden of England's attractions, including Leeds castle ' The loveliest castle in the world' , Canterbury Cathedral, Dover Castle, The Hop Farm family park, The historic Dock Yards Chatham, the cinque port towns, Port Lympne or Howlett's Wild Animal Parks , The rare breeds centre, Hever castle or the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

There is plenty for all the family to do an see within a very short drive, The UK's oldest brewery, Shepherd Neame in Faversham provides brewery tours with tastings, or the Designer outlet village in Ashford provides a shoppers paradise.

The village of Challock has two pubs, one serving excellent food 7 days a week, the other being a very traditional ale house, the barn shop is stocked with fine local produce, a horse riding school, the Kent Gliding club and the Beech Court Gardens & Tea rooms, plus it holds an annual goose fair on the green in September. Charing race course is only a few miles away with regular point to point meetings
