The village of Cloyne (in the Irish language “Cluain Uamha” or “Meadow of the Caves”) bears the same name as the diocese that was founded in the year 560 by St. Colman. St. Colman founded his monastery including a round tower and monastic school here in Cloyne. The Danes plundered this rich monastic settlement three times, in 822, 824 and 885. The present cathedral of Cloyne dates from 1250 but was built on the ruins of an older one. This historic village also has the ruins of a Norman watchtower overlooking the town from a nearby hill.
While staying in Cloyne you’ll never be short of a bite to eat or a drop to drink. There are three pubs in the village and four eateries. In the surrounding area there are also many restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets.
The Old Mill is an ideal base for exploring. It is just a 10 minute drive from the sea and beaches. Trabolgan Adventure Centre and Fota Wildlife Park are all about a 20 minute drive away. The historic town of Cobh can be reached in less than 30 minutes and the city of Cork is a similar distance by car or can be visited by train from Midleton. If you want to explore a little further why not try Blarney and kiss the famed Blarney Stone and 'get the gift of the gab' or visit the historic town of Kinsale famous for its many restaurants.
No matter what your reason for visiting Cloyne you can be assured of a warm East Cork welcome.
