Quinta Velha was a working farm with cow sheds, horse stables, hay lofts and a rectangular water tower to store water for farm animals during the dry hot summers. The buildings have very thick walls and been sympathetically converted & modernised using local Santa Catarina tiles (inside and outside) on floors and roofs, with wooden ceilings. Over 2000 hand painted tiles produced by the owners in their studio (formerly horse stable and groom's sleeping quarters, using Portuguese & old Dutch Delft blue designs, can be found on walls, bench seats & on the external staircase, leading to the veranda on the top of the old water tower.
Girassol was the original heart of the old farm and has been sympathetically restored with disabled holiday makers in mind, so the entire floor area is on one level, with no doorsteps, 90 cm wide internal doors.
Both front and back doors are accessible by wheelchair via a paved footpath from the car parking area around the old water tower and terraces.
The bathroom has a wet floor shower with support bars and a shower wheel chair is available in addition to a number of aids, such as bed blocks to increase bed height and a toilet seat height extender.
Via permanent ramps harmoniously arranged as part of the front terraces, wheelchair users can get the covered barbecue area and the swimming pool.
Monte Canelas is in the rising foothills of the Monchique Mountains (highest point in the Algarve and 920 meters above sea level) close to the ancient and historical Neolithic burial grounds of Alcalar. (National monument)
