Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in West Kensington - Auriol Mansions

A tale of Eastern splendour

Tiger in the grass

The tranquil district of West Kensington oozes old-fashioned Englishness. In spring, Oxford and Cambridge’s crews flash frantically past the Hammersmith side of the river in the famous Boat Race. In summer, the air rings to the soft report of ball against racket on the grass courts of Queen’s Club, famously the preparation for Wimbledon. What could be more English? But this quiet quarter hides an exotic secret. Here, a well-seasoned traveller has carved out a splendidly opulent space to call her own. An elegant first-floor apartment in a Victorian mansion, it invites you to discover its many treasures.

A tale of many journeys

Your globe-trotting hostess hails originally from the Lebanon and first journeyed to England in the 1970s, braving the winters of discontent to stay and raise her children here. Now those children have grown up and adventured away in their turn to the international haunts of Dubai and Paris and she spends much of her time visiting them. She keeps the apartment as her main base in London, which she still sees as her base. Here, ancient and modern worlds combine seamlessly, as clean, cool spaces and colours blend with artworks from all over the world – an iron Buddha here, a group of delightful bronze figurines there.

Open Sesame

When you enter, the long hall offers you a choice of doorways. In the light, spacious living-room, a beautiful Eastern rug covers the wooden floor, huge, stunning porcelain vases stand on glass shelves and two stone Japanese women guard the hearth. In the kitchen area, pots and pans hang from the ceiling and glass jars are filled with heavenly-looking spices. This place tempts you with sensuous offerings, as you slowly prepare a feast fit for a thousand and one guests.

The first of two double bedrooms is a tranquil space, with a rocking-chair where you can curl up to read tales of travel and adventure. A substantial bathroom boasts a huge wall mirror, and the master bedroom is elegant and evocative, with paintings of the desert and boats at sunset on the seashore. From this room, a sliding frosted door leads you alluringly into an ensuite bathroom, a peaceful oasis with a huge walk-in shower fit for a potentate.

A journey onwards

If you want to journey onwards, why not wander down the road to see where the river winds its way east through Hammersmith? Catch a tale of derring-do at the Riverside Studios, one of London’s most appealing art-house cinemas, or sup at the River Café, famously the starting-out place of chef Jamie Oliver. Venture a little further and explore the fascinating Moroccan quarter of Golborne Road and barter with vendors at Portobello Road market. But if the modern world calls, your magic carpet awaits. The tube from nearby Hammersmith station can have you gazing at the lights of Piccadilly Circus in just over 15 minutes.

About Owner / Property Manager

onefinestay gives you the chance to stay in someone's place while they're out of town. You get to live their life for a few days and nights.

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room. And there's service to match.

Nobody wants to be a tourist, so our homes come with recommendations from the people who live in them. For everything else, we're here 24/7.

Why Owner / Property Manager chose West Kensington

West Kensington, with Fulham to the south and Shepherd's Bush to the north, carries the London postcode of W14. But walking down the streets stretching behind the Earl's Court and Olympia exhibition hubs this could translate into ‘Wanderlust 14’.

This is a globetrotting enclave, with Aussies and Kiwis cheerfully fusing with European entrepreneurs' families (there are Spanish and French private schools in nearby Brook Green), and an international cadre of students.

A creatively tolerant climate reigns, exemplified in the refurbed warehouses of Kensington Village, now housing major media companies like RDF Media and Archant. A favourite local watering-hole is vintage tea room Betty Blythe, with owner Lulu Gwynne pouring an excellent cup of Darjeeling and serving bijoux cupcakes (a dressing-up box is available for those really wanting to get into the 1920s spirit).

The Cumberland Arms also pours a fine glass of pinot noir for the young professionals occupying the imposing turn-of-the-century mansion blocks that set the course for this forward-thinking polyglot neighbourhood which continues anon.

What makes this apartment unique

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too.

Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities.

Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand.

And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.
