Maria's Village House is a traditional village house with modern facilities and Maria's Cretan welcome.

Within easy reach of the Venetian town of Chania on north western Crete.

The house is situated on the edge of the traditional village of Douliana surrounded by pine forest and olive groves.

On the ground floor level are the entrance doors into the living area with traditional Cretan day bed, corner fireplace with wood burning stove and large solid wood dining table and chairs.

You then pass through the stone arch into the kitchen area with cooker, washing machine and small dishwasher, ample cupboard space and worktops, the large fridge/freezer giving filtered cold water and ice for those cool summer drinks.

Leading off the living area, to the left is the main bedroom with large double bed, en-suite shower room and large fitted wardrobe. To the right the hallway leads to the main bathroom with corner bath and shower, further along leads to the 2nd bedroom with twin beds and wardrobe, both bedrooms have air-conditioning and double doors to outside terrace.

From the living area there is a staircase to the upper floor lounge with 2 large comfortable sofas, large inglenook fireplace, satellite TV and DVD. WI-FI internet is available in the house, garden, terraces and courtyard areas. The upper lounge has a large terrace to the rear of the house with spectacular views across the pine forest to the Cretan sea. The front balcony and side terrace has views over the olive groves with the famous White Mountains as the backdrop.

The outside of the house at the front, is a courtyard garden and barbeque area, to the side of the house is a passage way through a stone arch to the rear courtyard with heated hydro spa pool. The pool (4m by 2m) is designed for the enjoyment of a relaxing hydro spa massage, or just to cool off in the hot summer days. For swimming there are some of the best blue flag beaches on Crete within 5-10 mins. drive from the village.

To the rear of the house is Maria's garden with fruit trees of peach, nectarine, apple, plum, bananas and more. There are also herbs that Maria grows to use in cooking her traditional Cretan recipes learnt from her mother, as passed down through generations of her Cretan family.

Whilst staying at Maria's Village House you will regularly see Maria tending her garden and flowers. She takes great pride in looking after the house and garden, and David her husband, will be happy to help and advise you on local customs and places of interest, to enable you to experience living in a traditional village house in the historically protected Greek village of Douliana.

Douliana is still one of the villages to enjoy Cretan lifestyle, with the old cafeneon in the village square and a traditional Cretan taverna. The post and fresh bread are delivered to the cafeneon daily, there is also a small mini-market for essentials, all within easy walking distance. Larger super markets are available within a short drive of the village.

Sit in the small village square and take a coffee or ouzo from the cafeneon, and listen to the sounds of silence, interrupted by birds singing, sheep rustling in the olive grove, and the occasional discussion by the villagers about anything and everything.

We had a wonderful week at Maria's Village House. It all started with the welcome greetings and the complimentary food and wine (much appreciated after a long day of travel). The hospitality and helpfulness of the owners combined with the charm and ambiance of the home make this a perfect place to stay. An immaculately maintained house equipped with everything one might need, there are also two patios and a pool to relax in while enjoying the gardens and views. We found the location, in a small quiet village, to be excellent for both staying at home and touring, for it is a short drive to the beaches and other attractions. It is our hope to return for a longer visit someday.
