Guestbook comments from the owner
My husband and I came to stay at my Secret River for two weeks during September 2013 after being recommended to come and stay by some friends. Well it certainly lived up to expectations, the villa itself was spacious and really comfortable and well equipped, it also felt really homely I think because the owners use it a lot themselves. We had a couple of chilly damp days to start and the comfort of the villa meant it was nice to stay 'home' and the wood burning stove was great. The weather then improved and for the rest of our stay we were blessed with warm sunny weather, it was so lovely to sit out on the terrace, especially for meals and barbeques and the huge garden was brilliant as was the river at the bottom of the garden. You could sit and watch the wildlife (fish, ducks, herons and otters) or row up and down the very quiet and peaceful river - I had never rowed a boat before but loved it! We also used the bikes to cycle leisurely round the local villages, it was great to have them there to use when you wanted.
Three further members of our family flew over to France to stay with us for a week and there was plenty of room for the 5 of us, we also went out and about and visited some of the local attractions. There are Chateaus to visit at Rochefoucauld and Poitiers, pretty villages such as Nanteuil and Verteuil, the poignant village of Oradour and of course the numerous distilleries of Cognac.
It really was a lovely relaxing and peaceful holiday and because the villa is so nice there really is no pressure to go out if you don't want to and that really helped us to unwind during our stay.
