Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I came to stay at my Secret River for two weeks during September 2013 after being recommended to come and stay by some friends. Well it certainly lived up to expectations, the villa itself was spacious and really comfortable and well equipped, it also felt really homely I think because the owners use it a lot themselves. We had a couple of chilly damp days to start and the comfort of the villa meant it was nice to stay 'home' and the wood burning stove was great. The weather then improved and for the rest of our stay we were blessed with warm sunny weather, it was so lovely to sit out on the terrace, especially for meals and barbeques and the huge garden was brilliant as was the river at the bottom of the garden. You could sit and watch the wildlife (fish, ducks, herons and otters) or row up and down the very quiet and peaceful river - I had never rowed a boat before but loved it! We also used the bikes to cycle leisurely round the local villages, it was great to have them there to use when you wanted.

Three further members of our family flew over to France to stay with us for a week and there was plenty of room for the 5 of us, we also went out and about and visited some of the local attractions. There are Chateaus to visit at Rochefoucauld and Poitiers, pretty villages such as Nanteuil and Verteuil, the poignant village of Oradour and of course the numerous distilleries of Cognac.

It really was a lovely relaxing and peaceful holiday and because the villa is so nice there really is no pressure to go out if you don't want to and that really helped us to unwind during our stay.

Waterside peace and traquility

  • 5 out of 5
We spent two weeks at My Sweet River with our Labrador in September 2014 during which we experienced very good weather: temperature in the high 20’s most days, much sun, little rain and a few interesting thunderstorms.

The villa was extremely comfortable and had everything needed for our stay, even though the warm temperatures meant we didn’t experience the impressive wood-burner in the lounge, nor need to sample the extensive and varied CD and DVD libraries. Even though the front door is situated only a few metres from the road, the traffic on the road is very light and caused very little disturbance.

Without doubt for us the newly constructed very expansive wooden deck terrasse was the ‘piece de resistance’ of this excellent property; its two large cantilevered umbrellas provided essential shade from the hot afternoon sun. We liked nothing more than a long barbecued lunch (with the obligatory glass or two of wine), then relaxing on the terrasse before a 40 metre stroll through the garden to the river’s edge for a spot of fishing, or a row in the boat, in the deep but slow moving River Charente.

Our dog loved the large garden for playing and the lanes and tracks in the vicinity of the villa provided ample opportunities for long and pleasant walks. The vet in Ruffec was both easy to find and very helpful with the ‘Pet Passport’ requirements, though perhaps a little expensive!

We found shopping in either Ruffec or Mansle convenient with their supermarkets easy to find, as was the Geant commercial complex in Northern Angouleme, only 25 minutes or so away. We would recommend the Moulin de Condac and the La Marmite as restaurants serving good and reasonably priced meals; both are dog friendly and the Moulin’s waterside location was particularly attractive. There are also many interesting and beautiful villages in the vicinity to explore.

Correspondence with Martine & David throughout was excellent and we were particularly impressed with their administration; their bi-lingual information pack was very informative and on the odd occasion when required we found their locally based friends Ken & Eleanor to be very pleasant and helpful.

All in all, an excellent property in a peaceful and interesting location that provided a brilliant holiday (if not large fish!) and, without doubt, one that we would happily return to in the future.

Wonderful Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 out of 5
Myself, my husband and our dog had a wonderful holiday at 'My Secret River'. The garden is extensive which our dog absolutely loved, my husband thoroughly enjoyed the easy access to the fishing i.e. a 2 second stroll to the bottom of the garden where he managed to catch quite a few fish! I enjoyed relaxing on one of the sun loungers in the glorious sunshine enjoying the complete peace, quiet and privacy of the setting. The house is lovely, spacious and fully equipped with everything you could need, great terrace where we spent every evening having a bbq then lighting the chimenea and enjoying the local wine! The owners were very helpful and informative and even went so far to book an appointment for our dog at the nearby vets on our behalf as our French is not very good! Overall a super holiday and we have already recommended this lovely Villa to our friends and relatives. Thanks for a great stay, Menna & Karl Topp (& Ruby the dog 2!).

The Beautiful Charente

  • 5 out of 5
Gary and I stayed in this beautiful home for three months, we were lucky enough to have family and friends visit from Australia who also fell in love with this area. We were so close to everything from the Beach at La Rochelle to the Cognac at Cognac to the wonderful Dordogne we went everywhere but will always love the Charente.
Martine and David the house is superb both old and modern, that shower after an exhausting day out was wonderful, and fully equipped meant just that, I could not want for anything it just added to such a wonderful stay. All the photos are exactly how the house is, we went for so many wonderful walks, and in to Aunac most days to purchase our croissants for breakfast, the French were so wonderful to us we just cant say enough. And last but not least were Ken and Eleanor who attend to anything you may need, they were just wonderful. We hope to come again. Many thanks to you all.

Peaceful Charente

  • 4 out of 5
One of the most relaxing holidays we've had in a long time. The house is lovely and is situated in a very nice part of France. Greener than the Dordogne and with less tourists the Charente region has a lot more to offer than we expected. The local villages are well maintained and there are plenty of good restaurants. After three weeks we didn't want to leave. I recommend the Auberge restaurant in Nanteuil (there are 2) next to the church it was one of the best French meals I've had and I live in France. The house has everything you need including an excellent shower. One small improvement would be a bigger tv since we wanted to watch the Olympics but honestly you will spend most of your time outdoors in the lovely garden. The fishing was slow during the day but good in the evening and it is a fisherman's dream to be able to walk to the end of a garden and have your own private spot. All in all we were very happy and feel the benefit of our stay and we would recommend it to anyone that appreciates a peaceful relaxing holiday.

Our little piece of paradise.

We can highly recommend this house with it's beautiful setting and tranquility.
Lazing by the river,or trying to catch that elusive fish, heaven.
If you want peace, quiet and away from the madding crowd, this is it.
We enjoyed our two weeks here and will recommend it to family and friends.
