|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Stay in a recently renovated apartment in a Historical building that sleeps 4 people.
Originally a Greek Family shop, now a tastefully decorated comfortable visit with all the old features remaining (Coved brick and wooden ceilings) but with modern facilities.
1 bedroom, double bed, fully equipped kitchen, 1 good sized bathroom and a large lounge with dining area and LCD TV, DVD and Convertible sofa bed..
Come and stay in Balat Fener for an authentic experience of Turkish life.
On the Shores of the Golden Horn, it's only a 5 minute walk down the hill to the water and original Byzantine walls.
In the heart of Istanbul's old districts and one of the 7 hills of the Old city, the area is changing as its ancient homes, churches, mosques and synagogues go through gentrification, guided by UNESCO and EU programs..
The right choice for the discerning traveller.
My friend and I just spent a week in Istanbul and this apartment was perfect for us. We were both very comfortable. The place had everything that we needed. We never cooked (except coffee) but we could have if we had wanted to. The neighborhood was cool and if you want a less expensive but great meal or any food, you could get it there instead of in the touristy areas. We walked almost everywhere and it was also easy to access the ferry, bus or taxi to get to other areas. Peter's information sheet was the basis for my itinerary. We went to the oldest Turkish baths that he suggested which was an experience. We bought the croissants type rolls from the street vendor who comes by every morning about 10. The store across the street is great for most of your necessities but there are also great shops down on the main street of the neighborhood. Peter and Oksan arranged our taxi to and from the airport which was a big help. I have already recommended the place to a coworker who is going to Istanbul in September. It is off the beaten path but that is what we enjoy.
We stayed for 6 days. It was our first time in Istanbul and you couldn't find a better place to stay. We liked the neighborhood with its old houses, friendly and helpful people, corner shops, children playing in the streets just a short walking distance or a few bus stops away from the busy, more Western neighborhoods with its hordes of tourists. At the apartment we found everything according to the description. The kitchen is well equipped, though we usually went out for dinner. The owners Peter and Ozkan were very helpful before and during our stay. In short: We can fully recommend the apartment and will surely come back!
This is the nicest place we have ever stayed, without a doubt. Cosy, beautifully-presented, and full of character. It more than lives up to its depiction in the images ! We were very impressed by how well equipped the kitchen was, and by the presence of books, DVDs & helpful guides. It was very clean and provided everything one needed for a week's stay. We enjoyed the ambience so much that we chose to stay in two nights and cook our own dinner !
We arrived late evening, and the owners (Peter & Ozkan) were waiting for us and provided us with such a warm welcome. They so kindly, and thoughtfully had laid out a bottle of wine and a loaf of bread (with butter in the fridge) which, after a long day of travel, was so welcoming !
The apartment is located in a characterful 'authentic' street, where you mix with the locals. This is a lovely, low-profile way of holidaying. And, with a well-stocked shop just next door, and non-touristy restaurants 10 minutes walk away, we did not want for anything.
We enjoyed walking down to the Golden Horn (sea inlet), and then along to the more touristy parts of Istanbul. But, at the end of a busy day in the city, always so lovely to return to our welcoming 'cave'.
Would thoroughly recommend to my family and friends !

What an exceptional find! Conveniently located close to buses that go basically everywhere this well equipped apartment will provide an oasis for your time in Istanbul.
Is the Balet District for you? Do you think happiness smells like bread sticks pulled straight from the wood stove? Do you think shopping at local markets is an adventure--especially when the vendor takes his time to teach you how to signal half a kilo? Are you up to trying local breakfast pastries from the carts that travel down your cobble stone street? Have you ever wanted to be the only one, alone with your camera, with incredible mosaics surrounding you? Would you climb up to the top of the ancient city walls to get an incredible view of Instanbul? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you would indeed reverence the moment you are caught in the rain with one of Balet's own (in conservative dress)...she smiles at you..reaches up toward the heavens as if to tell you rain is a blessing from God...now you know you belong in Balet.
Many thanks to our in incredible hosts.
Nice apartment: all the needed amenities and enough space for both together time and private space. Did lots of cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. Ideal location: convenient to transportation and a great neighborhood for just walking around. Nice neighborhood markets for eating-in supplies. Great hosts: ever ready to help with information and logistics. Both my traveling companion and I would stay here again if we get back to Istanbul.
They say that good things come in threes and this one is no exception!
... Peter and Özkan are such lovely people and the most wonderful hosts that one could imagine.
... They have done marvels with this apartment - it so cosy.
... They live in such a terrific city that has so much variety to offer!
We had a fabulous time here in Istanbul and absolutely fell in love with this suburb as it felt so real and natural to be here. After spending the days sightseeing, it felt so nice to come back to the accommodation in the evenings just walking along the water and then into Balat.
Istanbul has so much to offer that our 3.5 days didn't even scratch the surface. We will definitely return and bring our kids along next time!
On the edge of the more busy tourist area stay in a authentic neighborhood and immerse yourself in the local culture, yet still have easy access by foot, or a 10 minute ride on local transportation to Aya Sofia, The Blue Mosque, Topkapi palace, the Grand Bazaar, Beyoglu Taxsim etc, and all of Istanbul's major tourist attractions.
On hilly cobbled streets, the twin neighbourhoods of Balat Fener were once the home of Istanbul's minorities. Here you'll see old Greek, Jewish, and Armenian homes, and some of the cities oldest Synagogues and Churches.
The area, because of so many national treasures, was recently declared a world heritage sight by UNESCO and so now has a mixture of older more conservative residents and more modern new comers living in their restored houses.
Your host's are local British/Turkish residents on hand to give any information or help if required.
The area is loved by photographers and film makers so don't be suprised to come across film crews as you wander around. The street were you will stay was featured in the last Bond movie 'Skyfall'.
