On the edge of the more busy tourist zones stay in a authentic neighborhood and immerse yourself in the local culture, yet still have easy access by foot, or a 10 minute ride on local transportation to Aya Sofia, The Blue Mosque, Topkapi palace, the Grand Bazaar, Beyoglu Taxsim etc, and all of Istanbul's major attractions..

On hilly cobbled streets, once the home of Istanbul's minorities, you'll see ancient Greek, Jewish, and Armenian homes and places of worship.

Balat, a beautiful area, was recently declared a world heritage sight by UNESCO and so now has a mixture of older more conservative residents and more modern new comers living in their restored houses. The area has a bohemian feel with it's rich tapestry of Artists, writers, artisans, international residents, and visitors.

Your host's are local British/Turkish residents on hand to give any information or help if required.

NB.of all the streets, in this mammoth city of up to 20 million people, James Bond (a fellow Englishman) choose to shoot part of his latest movie 'Sky fall' on our very street a couple of weeks ago. So come stay at a house you will be able to point to on the big screen :)

Beautiful apartment, great location

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 03 May 2013 Date of Stay: April 2013
My husband and I stayed here for a month, with our two grown children joining us for part of the stay. We couldn't have been happier with the facilities, the location, or the hosts. The apartment is charming, clean and comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen, reliable internet service, and all the amenities you'll need. The location can't be beat. There is frequent, direct bus service to the tourist areas very close to the apartment. (Before arriving, this was one of my concerns, since you can't always gauge distances or ease of travel from a map.) And right in the neighborhood itself there are cafes, restaurants, green grocers, butchers, etc. A convenience store is literally right across the street. The neighborhood has great character. It's a mix of rehab'ed buildings, such as this apartment, more lived-in buildings, and some that are uninhabitable. But it feels perfectly safe; the kids play in the streets, folks sit out on their stoops in the afternoons and evenings; it's always lively and friendly. Finally, the owner is a delightful person, so easy to work with, and always available for suggestions, advice, etc. We couldn't have been happier with our stay here and would not hesitate to return or to recommend the property to our friends and family.

A wonderful way to experience real Istanbul.

Review Submitted: 22 March 2013 Date of Stay: March 2013
We have just returned from a wonderful week in this beautiful apartment in the heart of old Istanbul. Thanks to the detailed instructions and advice sent in advance by Peter we found it easily and were thrilled as soon as we walked in as it was so warm and welcoming.
The location is excellent being situated in the heart of Fener Balat which has the feel of a small local village yet only a bus ride from all the sites you want to see. We really enjoyed walking around the local streets just soaking up the atmosphere and looking at all the assorted old houses, mosques and churches which remain.
Peter and Ozkan have left lots of handy nformation for suggested days out and various guide books.
The apartment was spotlessly clean with everything in you could need including thoughtful touches like umbrellas, powerful hairdryer, toiletries etc.
What really made the holiday for us though, apart from the buzz and beauty of Istanbul, was the welcome of Peter and Ozkan who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. One of our best evenings was seeing the renovations they have made to their beautiful home and meeting their friends who all live in this great area. The mix of ruinous houses next to beautiful renovations is fascinating to wonder around.
We did force ourselves away from this little haven and had a great time seeing so much of Istanbul. Every evening we were glad to get back to our little home in the village in the city.
We are planning to return to Istanbul and we will be returning to this little gem. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else and can't wait to see their latest work in progress restoration project.
If you like experiencing the real atmosphere of a place this is where you must stay. You will not regret it.

Thank you for your visit and we sincerely hope you'll keep your promise to be our first guests to return!
I love the way you describe Balat/Fener one of the most beautiful areas of Istanbul and one of the cities treasures. It really is
a hidden jewel, with a village like feel, in the heart of the city!
With best regards we await your return!

So comfortable and well-located place to get all historical signs and museums, such as Taksim Square, Aya Sophia, Galata tower, Mosques and churches. Very friendly owners, help anytime you need it. We had the best time which can't be forgotten!!!

The flat is perfect place to feel ureself like at home, all needed facilities, clean and great organized for your holiday. Its very easy to get any shop, groceries or markets (opened till the evening time), restaurants and cozy caffes.

Who thouse who prefer quite rest without city's rush its the very place to get unforgateble time, watching old streets' culture and an immortal traditions of local people. Accommodation which is must not to be missed, where you will breath the power of history.

Thanks a lot for everything, we will back there again for sure!!! With the best wishes, Toti & Elena.

Senior Citizen From California

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 18 January 2013 Date of Stay: September 2012
I previously tavelled to Turkey in 2006 with my nephew and his wife and had a wonderful experience. This gave me the confidence as a senior citizen to return to Istanbul for a months vacation on my own. For the first time I used the internet to find an apartment instead of staying in a tourist hotel. I found this great apartment in the old Jewish neighborhood of Balat hoping for a great adventure. I was not disappointed! The apartment and neighborhood far exceeded my expectations. I wanted to explore everyday Istanbul life away from the crowded tourist areas – and I did! I met lots of locals and made a host of new friends. The owners of the apartment Peter and Ozkan were splendid hosts. Because of them, my stay was far beyond the average tourist experience. I had a fabulous time. Most days there was a film crew on my street filming a Turkish soap opera or large screen movies. One day directly in front of my apartment. Fun. I walked from 3 to 5 miles most days doing all the usual touristy things and exploring different neighborhoods, bazaars and shops. I returned home on October 20 wishing I had stayed another month. I have an invitation to return again next year. Maybe I will. If you are looking for an authentic Turkish neighborhood experience and a beautiful apartment this is the place! It was more like a home away from home and I saved lots of money. All in all it was a five star vacation. I highly recommend Old Istanbul Stay to my friends and family or anyone else for that matter.

Access to authentic Istanbul

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 16 January 2013 Date of Stay: November 2012
Our hosts welcomed us right off the bat with a warm greeting, a bottle of wine, and a quick introduction to the space. Then, they left us to explore the apartment, the neighborhood and the city well-armed with resources. They were right upstairs if we needed them and were also available by phone. Wonderful hosts!

The apartment was exactly what we expected and met our needs perfectly. We lived right off Istiklal the previous year, so we know the city pretty well. For this visit, we wanted to step away from the noise and crowded chaos of that part of the city. Balat is filled This apartment gave us the ability to cook as many meals as we wanted, relax each night on the sofa watching videos or playing backgammon. It was just the right amount of space for two people, especially compared to the tiny space you get in a hotel room in Sultanamet!

The bus was easy to use, especially with the rechargeable Istanbul travel cards provided by our hosts. However, on several occasions we walked to the Grand Bazaar through the streets of the Fatih neighborhood which is a fascinating way to see the "real" city. The Charshamba market on Wednesday in that neighborhood reminded me of the markets geared towards the regular people of London - lots of fresh foods and housewares! On a daily basis, we went into Balat to buy our groceries and enjoyed the old-fashioned experience of going to the grocer, the butcher, the cheese shop, etc.

We appreciated our hosts suggestions on local places to eat including Findik Kabugu (beans and rice primarily), Halic Sosyal Tesis (sort of like a municipal social club restraurant - right on the water), and the breakfast place on the way to the main street that we regretted not trying! We also loved both local soup places down in the town - one of them packed up some of their delicious bread for us to take away for breakfast. Yum!

Everything in house worked just fine. The house had a lots of extras including a washer/dryer and a great dehumidifier, since it's a basement apartment - the white noise it provided was perfect for masking the noise of the city (which you get anywhere in Istanbul) We wished we'd had one when we lived in Istiklal where we truly needed it!

All in all, it was a great experience and I would recommend a stay to anyone! Ask for a tour of the amazing house upstairs if you go, and don't be surprised if they try to talk you into buying a house in the neighborhood and "renovating a ruin" of your own
