Full of character and atmosphere, Cascais and Estoril are the summer retreats of the city dwellers of Lisbon and are also known as elegant Lisbon Coast resorts for international visitors. Located about 20 km. west of the capital, for centuries Cascais and Estoril have been refuges for monarchs and aristocrats and latterly, artists, politicians, writers and actors.
Fashionable and stylish now, Cascais has not forgotten its fishing heritage and its origins as a tiny fishing hamlet are recalled in the old harbor area where locals still mend their nets, colorful boats jostle for space and a lively fish auction ensues every day. Retaining cobbled streets and narrow meandering alleyways, the charm of the town is its local 'feel', and, albeit for the fact that it has swelled in size to become a substantial resort with many amenities, it is yet traditional and typical in so many ways.
