Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 7 nights in Feb 2015. The apartment matches the pictures posted online. It is the top floor of the white building in the photos.

Summary: both Marc and his wife were easy to deal with and responded very quickly when we had questions, no problems with check in or out or with the security deposit. The apartment is wonderful, location is excellent. They also have a couple other rentals in Porto as well as one in Lisbon. Would be very happy to stay here again. We loved Porto as a city so much it has made our short list as a potential place to retire.

Arrival: by train from Lisbon (taxi was approx 7 Euro + baggage fee). If you take the subway from the train station it is all downhill to the apartment from the Sao Bento stop. Marc was out of town so his wife met us with the keys. She went over the apartment with us and we gave her the security deposit. She explained there is a Market (Mini Market) 2 blocks to the right and then down towards the river but we could not find it. There is also another one block off Rue da Floras on Largo dos Loios.

View: fabulous. The terrace is off the main bedroom upstairs. Unfortunately we only had 1 sunny day (Feb) that we could sit out with chairs and table. You can see from the Se cathedral over across the river to the Mosterio (Monestary). The view from the living room and second bedroom is of the park and the Stock Exchange (Palacio de Bolsa). We had no issues with noise anywhere in the apartment during our stay. The bed in the main bedroom was quite comfortable.

Elevator: apartment is on the 5th floor. Elevator starts on the 1st floor so there are about 20 steps from the front door to the elevator.

1st floor: Entry, 2nd bedroom, bathroom with shower, kitchen, living room, dining room.

2nd floor: main bedroom, bathroom with bathtub and shower. Lots of closet space Kitchen: Microwave, stove top, oven. We had a bit of trouble figuring out how the oven worked but they dropped off the manual.

Laundry: none - nearest 1 km (0.6 miles) away ("A Lavandeira")

TV: cable with multiple English channels

Lots of restaurants by the river. Taxi stand, ATM, Tour bust stop very close.

Favorite walk: By the river, across the bridge to the gondola. Take gondola. short walk to Monastery (great view from its plaza), across the top of the bridge, past the Se cathedral, downhill to apartment.

Enjoy your time in Porto and the apartment. Wish we were still there.

Simply Cannot Be Improved Upon

  • 5 of 5

Let me be straightforward and to the point: If you're looking to stay in Porto--either briefly or for an extended stay--you cannot do better than to stay here. The San Nicolau neighborhood is, of course, the very heart of Porto's UNESCO Heritage zone, as well as (it must be said) a tourist destination.

That noted, you're on the top floor of a completely (and newly) renovated building, so your high above any hubbub. It's very nearly a penthouse. (There are only two apartments per floor.)

The owners of this apartment have been both careful and generous in their interior appointments. You neither feel that you're living in a sterile hotel room nor intruding upon someone's personal space. In short, it's both well-appointed and well-equipped, with very substantial storage space as well as beautiful modern cabinetry. This was not done on the cheap.

The view of the Douro River from the upper-level bedroom is simply classic. It's the million-dollar view of the river and the Luis I Bridge. And when you see it with a full moon rising...

The owner, Marc, is solicitous, multi-lingual and proud of his apartment. And he wants you to enjoy it. Whatever request or question we had, Marc answered promptly and generously. He's an ideal landlord.

Bottom line: Go! Rent with confidence. Everything you see in the photos is accurate. It's a superb apartment, beautifully outfitted in one of the best, most interesting parts of Porto.

Fabulous apartment

  • 5 of 5

We only had 2 nights in Porto before our river cruise. We wanted to stay right in the middle of the historical section close to the river. This was perfect !!! Marc was fantastic about emailing back and forth when we first contacted him from the US. His English is really good. We were lucky to get the 2 nights we needed in between his busy calendar of bookings. He and his wife made it so easy for us to meet them with the keys. We were driving from Lisbon so unsure when we would be arriving. We kept in touch by emailing. They were very friendly and flexible ! All I say about the décor of the apartment is WOW ! A very contemporary & urban design which is a wonderful contrast to the historical town of Porto. The views are amazing from both the downstairs and upstairs balconies. The apartment is one of the highest in town over looking the river Douro. The rooftops and iconic bridge in the distance made it great for photography. No need to mingle with the tourists. Great kitchen -We loved the upstairs outdoor space and the table for 2. Best views right here. We wish we could have stayed longer. We only used the 1 upstairs bedroom. Bathroom was wonderful with a great shower. I would gladly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Porto.

Best location in Porto

  • 5 of 5

This very high quality 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment provides substantial space and privacy for 2 couples--for which it was ideal. The view from the apartment in all directions is superb and stunning--a photographer's delight! We were in Porto for a conference and this duplex was in the absolute best location imaginable anywhere in the city. It is superbly situated for access to the river and a short walk across the bridge to the Port cellars. We could not have picked a better location.

The quality of the place was outstanding and it was very clean and well maintained. Very pleasing to the eye. Very safe location with a coffee shop and a superb Italian restaurant only a few steps from the front door. The couple who owned the place were very helpful and reasonable. It is not far from the train station (10-12 minute walk) and is very close (just south) to the small park Jardim do Infante Dom Henrique. It is very close to many riverside restaurants which makes it very easy to stroll off each evening to try a new restaurant by the river (which is the main restaurant and entertainment district).

In short, we highly recommend this place for staying in Porto.

The owner was very cooperative and very helpful for our 2 week stay.

Superbly located, pristine, & comfortable apt.

  • 5 of 5

The location of this apartment, one block from the Douro River and overlooking the park that the Stock Exchange borders was ideal. Many cute restaurants along the waterfront and easy to walk across the bridge to port wine tasting at a variety of companies. We even attended a classical piano recital at the Stock Exchange. Apparently they frequently have concerts in the magnificent Arab room.

Don't bother buying a Porto Card or Andante pass if you stay here as the place is convenient to walk to many sights.

The apt. Is very modern. A small washer/ dryer and iron are included , and also a dishwasher. There is a high chair there ,but if you have a young child you will need to block access to the stairs as there is no child accessible handrail. Plenty of hot water. Hair dryer also included. If you are a U.S. resident you will need to bring an adaptor for the outlets.

The listing is accurate in terms ofwhat it provides. There is a darling balcony off the maser bedroom that overlooks the river and also has city views. There are no spices, toiletries, etc that are provided, so bring your own. The property is very well-maintained. We were met by a friend of the owner who only spoke Portugese. Fortunately, we knew enough Spanish that we were able to get some basic understandings. There is a small, market for your cooking basics that is two blocks down toward the bridge and turn right toward the river. It is on the right side of e street. Two,restaurants, Primm and A Grade are within a couple of blocks. Primm is on the same street across from the stock exchange.

Check out was quick. There was no hassle getting our security deposit back. You will need a taxi to and from the train, if at is what you are taking. We did not have a car, but it appears that there is a public parking garage nearby. The wireless Internet was fast and available in all rooms. There is no phone in the apartment. There is a flat screen TV with a few English channels. The elevator to the apartment was always available. We were only provided with one set of keys to the apartment, so if you need more, you should check with the owner first.

We would stay here again if we revisit Porto (which we hope to do!)
