Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Ventnor - Smugglers Cottage

'Home from Home' 4 bedrm Cottage in Central Ventnor, Walkers & Cyclists paradise

Get away from it all on the beautiful and peaceful Isle of Wight. The moment you get off the ferry, you will feel the difference. Our lovely 4 bedroom holiday cottage, 'Smugglers', in the centre of Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, sleeps 7 people comfortably, plus a cot if required. There is a double bedroom which has a single room adjoining & a double room with a twin room adjoining. There is a shower room, and a family bathroom fitted with a toilet, basin & bath with shower attachment. Downstairs there is a comfortable living room with a wood burning stove, leading to the dining room & newly fitted kitchen. The courtyard garden has seating & a barbecue area. At the side of the holiday cottage is a useful covered passageway that lends itself perfectly to storage of bicycles, wellington boots, kayaks & surfboards. The double doors open onto the road for easy loading & unloading. There is no parking at the property, however there are two car parks which are less than 5 minutes walk away. The bus service is fantastic, running every half hour through the day & every hour through the night. Bus stop 2 minutes from the cottage. We regret that, due to the steepness of Tulse Hill & the roads around Ventnor, the property is not suitable for the infirm.

This charming holiday cottage, built in the early 1800's at the beginning of Ventnor's popularity, has all the modern comforts you require to have wonderful holiday. The kingsize beds in the double rooms have pocket sprung mattresses to give you a great nights sleep. The smaller rooms have day beds that provide the ultimate flexibility without having to use sofa beds - comfortable for sleeping and close to parents for children, or use as a sitting room to relax in off your bedroom for couples renting the holiday cottage for a romantic break in Ventnor.

The new shower room has an electric shower to refresh you after a long day's walking on the Isle of Wight or beach activities.

The bathroom in this Ventnor holiday cottage has a new freestanding claw footed bath, hand basin and toilet.

The lounge has a wood burner so you can top up the warmth from the recently installed gas central heating if you wish.

The newly installed kitchen in this holiday cottage in Ventnor is fully equipped so you can produce wonderful meals yourself, or just microwave a ready meal if you prefer. There is a fridge freezer, a washer dryer, dishwasher and tassimo coffee maker.

Free WiFi, BluRay Player, Freeview TV and a radio with iPod dock is supplied.

The garden has tables and chairs for 8 people and a gas barbecue with gas supplied.

There are board games. DVDs and books for rainy days too!

We returned to the Isle of Wight in 2011 and now live in Wroxall just five minutes north of Ventnor. We love the area, with it's beaches, rolling countryside and downland, especially because we have two terriers who live for their walks.

Matt and Sally Clark purchased this cottage in 2012

We fell in love with 'Smugglers' as soon as we stepped inside the door. It has a wonderful cosy feel to it, but is deceptively spacious.

It was built early on in Ventnor's history - about 1830. The garden is pretty and sheltered and the resident neighbours are delightful.

Central location in Ventnor

Close to the high street with shops, restaurants and bars.

Short walk down to the Esplanade to the beach and restaurants and bars there, including Ventnor Haven Fishery for fresh local wet fish and Fish & Chip takeaway!

Ventnor has many renowned restaurants - from classic English& World Cuisine to Tapas Bars and the usual takeaways and pub food.

Smugglers is such a lovely cottage, suited our needs well and even the dog was well catered for!! The welcome pack when we arrived was such a lovely touch with the dog being thought of too with a bag of treats!!. We hope to visit Ventnor again next and without a doubt will stay at Smugglers. Matt and Sally were so helpful throughout the whole process and couldn't have been more helpful. Thank you for everything.

The property is just as described, very well equipped, clean and comfortable - especially the beds! Matt and Sally's welcome and welcome pack were much appreciated, and the best we have ever had. Would highly recommend it, and look forward to returning in the future.

A LOVELY FEW DAYS IN VENTNOR

  • 5 out of 5
We spent the weekend here in early October. What a great place ! The cottage was perfect. Very comfortable, warm and welcoming and the provisions that were supplied (bread, Milk) was a lovely touch.

The bed was extremely comfortable and ensured a good nights sleep. We didn't use the wood burner, however it would have added to an enjoyable night in if we had.

The cottage is located right in the centre of the charming little town of Ventor. Steps away from the main shopping street with its bars, restaurants, shops and coffee shops, and no more than a 5 minute walk to the beach.

I would definately stay at Smugglers again. Its got a home away from home feel, and Ventnor is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

OUR STAY AT SMUGGLERS COTTAGE

  • 5 out of 5
We have just enjoyed a wonderful stay at Smugglers Cottage. Ventnor is our favourite place on the island - and the cottage provided a lovely, snug, home from home. The place has clearly just been renovated and it is spotless throughout, with a really nice sheltered cottage garden, which we used to take in the early October sunshine. Sally and Matt made us so welcome and we were really impressed by the generosity of the arrival food items that went generously beyond 'staples' - milk, bread, coffee, tea, eggs, butter, even wine. So much more than we have ever had in a holiday let before. There's a lovely wood burner and a host of TV, DVD, posh stereo-type stuff to keep us amused. Beds very comfortable and, although a cottage by name, the side rooms on each bedroom made it the perfect place to give a family, or bigger group, some space. It is conveniently located on a very quiet hill near the centre of Ventnor. Free parking is a 3 minute walk away up the hill and around the corner, on a quiet residential street. The co-op is a very short hop, the seafront is less than 5 minutes away and the enchanting hamlet of Bonchurch is a refreshing 20 minutes away along the coastal walk. For food, we'd recommened Phileas Fogg (30 seconds away) for dinner, or the wonderful newly-landed fish, fried fresh in front of you, from the little fishing pier takeaway on the seafront. The Spyglass Inn on the seafront is also great for really good pub grub. All in all, thoroughly recommended.. we'll be back!

EXCELLENT!!

  • 5 out of 5
We have just returned from a weeks stay at smugglers and what a great week it was! Sally and mark were very helpful and full of lots of information about the island, my daughter, her friend and myself wanted to go on a horse beach ride but wasn't sure where they were, we asked Sally and mark and within half an hour they got back to us with all the information we needed! The cottage has everything you could ask for and is in a very good location, the kids loved it and were never bored as Sally and mark have thought of everything with a box full of games for them. Thank you for helping to make our stay an enjoyable one. We will defInitely return to Smugglers when we go back to the Isle of Wight.

WE LOVED SMUGGLERS COTTAGE

  • 5 out of 5
When we arrived Matt & Sally were there to greet us, they are a lovely couple who went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed.

The cottage is beautiful; it has been renovated to a very high standard with no expense spared, whilst still maintaining its charm. The facilities are excellent both inside and out, we were lucky enough to have good weather and enjoyed cooking outside on the BBQ provided. There was ample space for us all, plus friends who visited us, who live on the Island. I will be recommending this cottage to all my friend and family.

We visted Blackgang. Robin Hills, The Model Village at Godshill, Sandown Zoo & Beach, The Donkey Sanctuary at Wroxall, The Maze, The Spy Glass, Met Bar and The Ale and Oyster in Ventnor plus the lovely beach, all of which I would recommend. We also went on a fishing boat trip from Ventnor which was great fun.
We are a family of 7 ages ranging from 2 to 77 years old; the whole family had a great time and loved the cottage and attractions, we found something for everyone and will most definitely be back, we can’t wait to stay at Smugglers Cottage in the winter with the log fire roaring....

Thank you Matt & Sally

Built in the early 1800's & newly refurbished, Smugglers is in the heart of the lovely seaside town of Ventnor. Moments from the high street, it is a short walk to Ventnor's restaurants, pubs & coffee shops, as well as the beach. The pretty villages of Bonchurch, Niton & Shanklin are also close by. Ventnor golf course is less than 1.5 miles away, with the most stunning views across glorious countryside to the sea. Only a short drive away is Queen Victoria's beloved home Osborne House, the historic Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle as well as family attractions such as Blackgang Chine & Sandown Zoo. The wilder beaches to the west offer diving, paragliding, surfing & kayaking. For walkers, there are over 500 miles of very well signposted footpaths on the Island, more per square mile than any other English county! It is not far to The Needles & Alum Bay, Tennyson Down, Newtown Nature Reserve & much more. Yarmouth & Cowes are no more than 30 minutes by car, for those who love their sailing.

The 3rd bedroom has a fascinating 'smugglers hatch' - a hatch through to the kitchen below! Although this is bolted shut for safety, it begs the question 'what was its function?'. One theory is that it was a hatch with steps for the maid to get from her room to the kitchen and outside without being seen. Another is that Smugglers used it to drop contraband through the floor when the Duty Men visited! We like the last theory, but you decide which is best!
