Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Tokavaig - Alavik Lodge & Cottage
Perfect rural hideaway, spectacular views of sea & mountains, sleeps 2/4/6

A photographers paradise during the day and, at night, the dark skies of Skye are a star gazers dream.

Alavik Lodge & Cottage are unique holiday homes in one of the finest positions on the idyllic Isle of Skye, easily accessible via the Skye bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh or the Mallaig ferry. Combining the rugged beauty and timeless enchantment of the Scottish Highlands, the views and surroundings are both inspiring and dramatic at any time of year. Adjacent to SSSI* woodland in the small hamlet of Tokavaig, with views of Blà Bhein ridge and the stunning backdrop of the Cuillin Mountain range and coastline, guests can enjoy hill walking, climbing, canoeing, sailing, diving, fishing and mountain biking. Though perfectly secluded, there are nearby pubs and restaurants, with the lovely Eilean Iarmain Hotel & bar just 8 miles away. The village of Broadford, 15 miles away, has a good range of shops including a supermarket, chemist, hospital, bank and tourist information. (*Site of Special Scientific Interest).

MORE PROPERTY INFORMATION:

Alavik Lodge & Cottage are Scandinavian style holiday homes with excellent eco credentials. Of timber construction and superbly insulated, with wood framed double glazed windows, they are wonderfully cosy and warm, whatever the weather. The Lodge has a large log burner in the spacious open plan living area and the Cottage has a flue-less gas stove. Oil-fired central heating with individual thermostat controls in each room is also provided in both properties for your additional comfort. Alavik has a private water supply from its own borehole and with the Pozzani water filtration system our water is perfect for drinking - pure spring water that couldn't be fresher! Wooden floors throughout are complemented by comfortable furniture and plenty of places to sit and admire the spectacular views across the sea, Loch Eishort and Loch Slapin to the Cuillins through the double height glass wall of the Lodge or from the double sliding glass doors in the Cottage. At night, clear dark skies free from pollution present the heavens in all their spectacular beauty.

ALAVIK LODGE & COTTAGE can be rented together to sleep 6, or they can be hired individually – click on either of the two separate tabs for the Lodge (tab 2) or the Cottage (tab 3) at the top of the page for more details, pricing and availability.

ALAVIK LODGE (sleeps 4) has FreeSat TV channels, a Bluray player, a small library of video discs and CDs (films/opera/ballet mainly), a coin operated telephone and free WiFi Broadband so you can stay in touch via your laptop/iPad/smartphone, etc.

ALAVIK COTTAGE (sleeps 2), in contrast (for guests who really want to escape the 'rat race'), has no telephone, but benefits from free WiFi Broadband, FreeSat TV channels, a DVD/CD player and a small library of video discs and CDs (films/opera/ballet mainly) plus an iPod/iPhone dock with speakers so you can enjoy your own music.

USEFUL INFORMATION Both properties have a set of folders with comprehensive information on places to visit, activities, sports, pubs, restaurants, boat trips, ferries and trains. You will also find maps and books on local walks and attractions and a small, but growing, library of paperback books. As Tokavaig is a remote spot, we advise that you arrive equipped with your own provisions, at least for the first day or two - it is so beautiful here, you may not want to leave! If you travel on the ferry to Armadale from Mallaig, Advasar Stores, just a couple of minutes away, supplies most things you will need - open Monday to Friday 9.30 - 13.00 / 14.30 - 17.30 (18.00 in Summer) and Saturday 9.30 - 13.00 (they have fresh bread & milk Mon/Wed/Fri). There is also a large Co-op supermarket in Broadford, open 7 days a week (9.00 hrs - 22.00 hrs), convenient if you travel via the Skye Bridge.

GETTING TO ALAVIK

FERRY - You can take the ferry from the mainland at Mallaig, which takes just 30 minutes and arrives at Armadale Pier on the island, only 9.5 miles from Alavik. The last 6 or 8 miles (depending on which route you take) is along a single track road with plenty of passing places. It is advisable to book the ferry but this is a very romantic and beautiful way to arrive on Skye! Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Mallaig to Armadale: www.calmac.co.uk

SKYE BRIDGE - Drive across the Skye Bridge from the Kyle of Lochalsh and Tokavaig is 22.5 miles away, again the last 6 miles being along a single track road (not suitable for caravans).

About Tricia Petri-Clark

Tricia, originally from Sussex in South East England, but now living on the Isle of Skye, runs a home organising business (Your Home Organiser) and, together with her husband, owns and runs Alavik Lodge & Cottage, together with another holiday home, Gertie's Cottage in the picturesque small market town of Cranbrook in Kent (see HomeAway property number 831643).

Tricia Petri-Clark purchased this house in 2012
Why Tricia Petri-Clark chose Tokavaig

Having holidayed on Skye and the West coast of Scotland over the years, we found this the most magical and dramatic area we have ever visited. We were fortunate to find Alavik Lodge & Cottage in this little piece of heaven - wonderfully comfortable holiday homes in the most amazing location on the Sleat peninsula of Skye - remote but not too difficult to get to!

What makes this house unique

Alavik Lodge and Cottage are set in the most special, secluded and romantic landscape.

The spectacularly dramatic panoramic view from both Lodge and Cottage looks out over glittering sea lochs to the whole rugged mountain range of the Red and Black Cuillins and the Blaven (Blà Bheinn) ridge. When the weather is wild, we love to sit inside with the fire roaring and spend hours watching the view change with the weather and the light.

With no light pollution, at night, the skies here are so inky black we regularly see the milky way from the terrace and, if you are very lucky, on rare occasions it is possible to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

The land from the garden drops down gradually to a very beautiful bay through ancient woodland groves and old settlement ruins. Highland cattle and sheep graze here and we regularly see golden eagles. We have even seen an otter crossing the road nearby!

LOCATION

Tokavaig is situated in Sleat (pronounced 'Slate'), often referred to as ‘the garden of Skye’, a heavenly peninsula in the south end of the island. Violet, heather-clad mountains drop dramatically to the glittering blue sea that snakes around beaches and rocky shorelines, punctuated by lush gardens and dense forests. Sleat is home to not just some of the world’s most beautiful scenery, but also to award-winning restaurants, hotels and attractions. Add to that some of the finest entertainment from traditional, popular and classical music, theatre, dance and much more. Whether it’s an amble through a ruined castle, a whale-spotting boat trip, a cosy afternoon in front of a log fire or a Michelin-starred, candle lit dinner, Sleat caters for all. Tokavaig is an excellent base for walking, climbing, cycling, canoeing, etc, and for exploring this part of Wester Ross and Skye.

PLACES TO VISIT

A former Viking settlement, Tokavaig, known for its native woodland, is said to have been a special place for the druids. There are many castles on Skye and the ruin of the ancient castle of Dunsgaith, one of the oldest fortifications in the Hebrides, is just a short walk across a nearby beach. The oldest inhabited castle in the UK - Dunvegan, seat of the MacLeods for nearly 800 years, is open to visitors all year round. Clan Donald Skye, a magnificent 20,000 acre estate, and ancient seat of the Clan Donald, is just 9 miles away, where you can explore historic gardens and woodland trails around Armadale Castle and discover the history of the Scottish Highlands and Islands through the story of Clan Donald, one of the most powerful Scottish clans, at the Museum of the Isles. A little further afield on the mainland you can visit such iconic landmarks as Eilean Donan Castle and the picturesque village of Plockton, known as the ‘jewel of the Highlands’. Skye has long been a magnet for artists and crafts people of all types and you will find many studios on the island and workshops/courses in photography, painting, etc, are also available.

ACTIVITIES

Rock climbers, walkers and scramblers can embark on terrain offering every possible degree of difficulty or discover some of the highest sea cliffs in the British Isles. The area is famed the world over for its mountain challenges including the pinnacle perils of the Cuillin Ridge and the backdrop of incredible scenery, culture and hospitality makes this one of the best places to mountain bike in Scotland. Try the Red Cuillin Loop or the dramatic cliff top Idrigall Point on the Duirinish Peninsula in the north of the island. If you like getting wet, go wild swimming in the sea just a short walk from Alavik or at Glenbrittle’s magical Faerie Pools, or try kayaking, sailing, fishing or scuba diving in the crystal clear water round Skye’s coastline. There are many types of boat trips, including whale, dolphin and seal watching trips. Observe wildlife from the hide at Kylerhea Otter Haven, or visit the Bright Water Visitor Centre in Kyleakin to learn about Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water. For bird watchers – Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles and Buzzards and many other rare birds are regularly seen on Skye and the Isle of Skye Golf Club welcomes visitors.

EATING

You will find some of the finest restaurants in Scotland on Skye, including the Michelin-starred Kinloch Lodge, where Lady Claire Macdonald attracts visitors from all over the world to her cookery demonstrations, and The Three Chimneys near Dunvegan. Take a pub meal in the nearby Ardvasar Hotel, the lovely Eilean Iarmain Hotel at Isle Ornsay or take a ferry to the Old Forge at Inverie on Knoydart, listed as one of only 3 of “Scotland’s bloody good pubs by Peter Irvine - The Best Of Scotland 2011”. With no roads in or out, an 18 mile hike over munros or a 7 mile sea crossing make it the remotest pub on mainland Britain. Also on the mainland, but accessible by car, are the Plockton Hotel and Plockton Inn, both famous for excellent fresh local seafood, or travel via the highest mountain pass in Britain, the famous ‘Bealach na Ba’ (pass of the cattle) to the award-winning Applecross Inn. The Isle of Skye Brewing Company produces excellent ales, including Red and Black Cuillin and Blaven (Blà Bheinn), which can be found in many pubs and restaurants. Visit Talisker, the island’s only single malt distillery, or enjoy a free tasting of The Gaelic Whiskies at Eilean Iarmain.

Copy of ALAVIK COTTAGE review.

Alavik Cottage is a very beautiful cottage. All wood, there is all comfort. The views of the mountains and the sea is a real postcard. Is the ideal place to rest in peace. More, Skye Island is very very nice. A lot of walks are possible. Bérengère L.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Bérengère. I'm so glad you found Alavik Cottage beautiful and that you had all you needed for a relaxing and quiet holiday...

Crackin' view!

Crackin' view!
5 out of 5

As the title suggests, what a view! The cottage (sleeping 2) has double doors looking out over a beautiful bay, with the Cuilins brooding in the background, and eagles, birds, and deer all to be seen from the garden. Situated in the southern tip of the island, the cottage is ideally suited for return visitors who are looking for a more relaxing time on this stunning island. Saying that, we visited every corner of the island, and it was great to come home to a warm and comfy cottage to enjoy the sunset behind the mountains - picture postcard stuff! And if you like fresh seafood to cook in the modern kitchen, visit Paul and his Oysters, just up the hill behind the Talisker distillery, and there is a great little pub, The Old Inn, around there too. Loved the cottage, loved the island, loved the holiday!
Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review Liam! Happy you loved the Cottage, your holiday, and that the view was all you imagined!

Wonderful lodge and location

Review Submitted: 15 May 2012 Date of Stay: March 2012
COPY of ALAVIK LODGE review.

My wife and two teenage daughters recently spent a week at Alavik Lodge and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. The location is special, looking out over the water and onto the hills and we were fortunate to see some glorious sunsets out on the deck. The lodge itself is an excellent place to stay - plenty of room, tastefully decorated and furnished and with everything you need for a week away from home. Tricia was really helpful and attentive, calling after we arrived to make sure everything was ok for us and offering any help we needed during the week. We've been on Skye before and driven up and over the bridge but this time we took the short ferry trip from Mallaig to Armadale and that's definitely the way to travel. We had a wonderful time at Alavik and I'm sure we will be back.
Owner's Response: So glad you had everything you needed at the Lodge and that you were happy with our service. Most of all it's great to hear you had a great holiday! Thank you for your lovely review. Tricia
