Fiumelatte is a sub division of the municipality of Varenna in the Province of Como, located in the Italian region of Lombardy. It's a small pretty village which has ancient narrow cobbled streets that wind between the old buildings and is situated approximately 2 km south of Varenna, The village lies on the eastern side of Lake Como and benefits from some lovely lakeside walks.
The houses in this village are situated to the foot of the steep slopes of the Fopp mount, which is over 1000 meters high and crowned by the ruins of Castle of Vezio.
The pretty and well established village of Fiumelatte claims its unique name from the distinctive frothy river which runs through the village and which is famous in Italy as the country’s shortest river! Fiumelatte provides local residents with a good and authentic Italian restaurant, a local bakery and other local amenities.
Varenna is the place to get away from it all, but also be in touch with the rest of the Lake. For the romantics, the historians or for those who love peace, tranquility and a history that goes back thousands of years this is the place. Varenna is an ancient fishing village with close to 1000 residents spread along a steep hillside overlooking Lake Como.
Varenna, built on a rock at the foot of a mountain is a boat stop from Bellagio on the east side of the lake and though popular it escapes the throngs in Bellagio (undeniably lovely, but like many other undeniably lovely places the crowds, higher prices and ‘tourist trap experiences can be very trying). Varenna dates from the 5th century - you can still see in places the original Roman layout of the town: a geometric design which allows wonderful views of the lake.
The reds, terracotta and yellows of its houses, its mild climate and the olive and cypress trees make you wonder whether you aren’t 200km further south. After the nearby island of Comancina was destroyed the population increased and flourished. The warring factions, as with much of Lombardy saw Varenna at odds with Como on many occasions and the rule of Varenna pass in typical Italian family tradition from the Visconti family to the Sfondrati's. Today Varenna is a lovely spot to chill out, although be aware that shops and even restaurants have been known to shut for lunch, so expect the better things in life to take longer.
Varenna is one of the most beautiful towns on the lake, its steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. In the evenings, the village is serene and picturesque. Truly a perfect place for relaxing. This is an understatement! The warmth of the locals combined with the perfect setting of the place, would melt the coldest hearts of the most demanding travelers.
Guestbook comments from the manager
We've had a great week on Lake Como and the weather was just superb, as was our holiday apartment! The views were just beautiful and the accommodation was so much more enjoyable to stay in compared to a hotel room somewhere!
The village had a train service to Milan via lecco which was so handy and the ferry stop in Varenna was great for reaching Bellagio and Menaggio. Thanks for letting us stay here- its been the best!
