For those who are interested in old stone buildings, the Montreuil Bonnin Castle is a comfortable Renaissance home in the heart of an impressive medieval fortress with a gateway and a dungeon.
On the North side, the home opens onto a magnificent garden inside the fortress walls and looks over the Boivre village and valley to the South.
The ground floor has an entranceway, a well equipped kitchen, an office, a small sitting room, a large dining room with fireplace, a living room, a laundry room and a library.
Upstairs you will find 6 comfortable and spacious bedrooms, a small children's bedroom, 3 bathrooms, 1 shower room and 2 separate WC.
The living room, the library and 2 bedrooms are decorated with monumental fireplaces.
An exceptional example of medieval architecture, the Montreuil Bonnin Castle is an important historical site in Poitou. It served as a major hub of military and economic activity from the Plantagenets dynasty until the Wars of Religion.
According to the Melusine fairy, legendary creator of the dungeon, several well known people have visited the castle, including Aliénor d'Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Blanche de Castille, Saint Louis, Bertrand du Guesclin, the Admiral of Coligny, and François de la Noue.
Montreuil Bonnin Castle was also one of the most significant sites for making currency in the middle ages.
The 18th century fortress relied on the natural hill of northern bank of the Boivre to reinforce its defence. Large moats further added to the protection of the fortress, measuring approximately 100 m long and 50 m wide, with 5 towers and a circular dungeon. On the north, a drawbridge is protected by a 14th century castle gate entrance, and the Renaissance houses (15th and 17th century) sit to the south on the valley side. The fortress has a certain Romantic quality.

Last year we took on the family home and turned it into a rental accommodation.
We want to rent the Renaissance home in order to help preserve the remaining medieval heritage of Poitou, a registered historical monument.
The site, enriched by its history, is very impressive and interesting. Visitors all agree that the interior of the fortress is not only impressive but also full of charm. The house, thanks to its location, is always filled with sunlight throughout the seasons. Peace and quiet are guaranteed. The view of the Boivre valley is stunning and spectacular. The house is well equipped. The bedding is new. The pool is just a few steps away with child safety features.
