Things to do
-Historic Spanish Point: Close by your Osprey holiday accommodation, this museum and environmental complex contains a number of interesting attractions, from prehistoric archaeological remains to a turn-of-the-century pioneer homestead museum, boatyard, and citrus packing house. Additionally, there are some nature trails and gardens to enjoy.
-Beaches: An unbroken stretch of snow-white beach extends about 15 miles from Venice in the south to Sarasota Bay in the north, but only the tips are open to the public. Nokomis and North Jetty Park beaches are a 10 minute drive to the south of Osprey, and the highly-rated Siesta Key a little further drive to the north.
-Nightlife: Restaurants and bars are a little sparse on the ground in Osprey, but Vamo has more options a couple of miles up the coast. Of course, when you get down into Venice or up into Sarasota, your choices multiply exponentially. Osprey apartments and villas are ideally situated to take your pick of both towns.
-Watersports: Similarly with watering holes and eateries, marinas can be found in abundance to the north and south, meaning you get to pick and choose to find the best fit. Along with the usual fishing, skiing or sunset charters, North Jetty Park Beach in particular is known for its surfing.
-Myakka River State Park: 57 square miles of wetlands, woodland and prairies, Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's oldest, and occupies Osprey's immediate hinterland. For camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching, there's facilities galore to cater to your every wilderness need. 14 miles of river can be explored from a rental kayak or canoe, or charter an iconic airboat ride!
Weather in Osprey
The weather in the winter is so mild you can get by with shorts and a t-shirt most days; only very rarely does a cold northerly blow in to drop the ambient temperature below clement. So much water around stabilises the temperatures so even the high marks in the summer rarely get past the mid 30s Celsius, making Osprey the ideal year round destination. The summers do see significant rainfall, however, almost exclusively as short tropical thunderstorms.
Travel to Osprey
Nearby Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport could be an arrival option from a more major airport, as it's only 15 miles away; there are no direct flights from Europe. For a direct fly/drive option, Orlando International Airport is 145 miles away, and Miami 215, which aren't too bad considering the superb US highway network. This really is a country built for automobiles, so a hire car is by far your best option, especially as Osprey has no national bus or rail stations.
