Olhao is an ancient town, inextricably linked with the Algarve’s fishing industry. Situated on the edge of the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Reserve near Faro, holiday rental accommodation in Olhao is wonderfully easy to reach, yet has an atmosphere that makes it seem many miles from anywhere. Taking a villa rental in Olhao is a guaranteed way to relax in the warm sun of the Algarve, surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes and within easy walk of idyllic beaches.
The old quarter of Olhao is the most famous part of the town, blessed with an undeniably Moorish flavour. Every morning, the old town of Olhao bursts into life as local fishermen return home to sell their catch, which is amazingly varied each morning. The town is still centred around the ancient fishing port, with traditional lifestyles that still thrive. There is nowhere that you can experience pure Algarvian lifestyles like you can from rental accommodation in Olhao. Traditional cuisine is another major attraction to Olhao, especially, unsurprisingly, the seafood. Local restaurants make the air thick with the mouth-watering aromas of grilled fish. Even if you are only staying in a villa rental in Olhao for one night, you must try the local herring.
The port is an excellent place from which to take a boat trip into the Mediterranean to try a little deep sea fishing, enjoy an excursion to one of the immaculate beaches on a deserted island, including Fuzeta and Armona, or explore the watery world beneath with a scuba diving adventure. The islands of Fuzeta and Armona are wonderfully peaceful, with huge swathes of golden sand on which to stretch out and sunbathe, and the best natural conditions for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and scuba diving are found near them.
The Ria Formosa is a beautiful place to visit, that is, if you can drag yourself away from the fine, golden sands and warm, clear waters of the coastline. The Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is also accessible by ferry, and is one of the best places to walk, cycle and ride, but you will have to share the park with flamingo, storks and many other bird species and wildlife.
A little inland, the town of Moncarapacho is one of the most charming towns in the whole of the Algarve. Moncarapacho is certainly worth investigation from any rental property in Olhao, as the enormously laid back way of life is irresistible. Simply spend a few hours in Moncarapacho and the relaxing atmosphere cannot fail to rub off on you!
The Algarve is blessed with a sublime climate. Hot and dry during the summer and wonderfully mild during the winter, there is never a bad time to take self catering rental accommodation in Olhao, Portugal.
