Nafplion is among the most beautiful cities in Greece. Sandwiched between two fortress crowned peaks, the old Greek capital is filled with beautiful old buildings, villas and fortifications, making the undisputed jewel of the Peloponese. There is a huge amount to see and do from a Nafplion villa, from the beaches of the Pelopennese to the world famous archaeological discoveries of Mycenae and Epidaurus.
There is a huge amount to see whilst you wander the streets of Nafplion. As you arrive for the first time, the route through the suburbs is fairly unprepossessing, but once you arrive at the seafront, the maze of cobbled streets will almost certainly make you fall in love with the town. The old centre is wonderfully romantic, with plenty of seafood restaurants, beach cafes and atmospheric tavernas in which to sit and look out over the water towards the Bourtzi island fortress. Tours to the Bourtzi Fortress leave from the harbour. The oldest fortress, the Akonafplia is well worth investigating from Nafplion accommodation, as is the Palamidi Castle high above the town.
Nafplion is not a beach town yet there are some magnificent places to place your towel within walking distance of the centre of town. The most popular is Arvanitia Beach, a short walk from Palamidi, although Karathona has the finest sand. If you are looking for more beach facilities, the beach resorts of Kios and Irion are both under 15 minutes away by car.
There are also stunning archaeological sites in and around Nafplion. The impressive ruins of Tiryns and Asine are fascinating, and the panoramic views across the countryside are equally spectacular. However, two of the most spectacular places to visit from a self catering Nafplion property have to be the UNESCO acclaimed ruins of Mystras and the sensational Theatre of Epidaurus, carved from bare rock.
During the heat of the summer, the allure of the beach can easily become overpowering! Luckily, the resort of Porto Heli is not far from Nafplion accommodation. The resort is known for its water sport facilities, which are second to none in the area. The beaches are excellent, providing a well earned rest for weary limbs after a morning of exploring the most impressive sites in Greece.
The summer months are gloriously hot in Nafplion. Average temperatures in June, July and August reach over 30˚C, with the warmth lasting long into the evening. There are few things as pleasant as eating outside in your shirt sleeves, watching the sun slowly setting over the horizon. Even during the depths of winter, average temperatures are over 10˚C, perfect for exploring the town and local archaeological wonders.
A holiday rental property in Nafplion can be reached in just two hours by car from Athens Airport (ATH). There are a great range of car hire options from the airport, and with regular, direct flights from the UK on easyJet, Olympic Airlines and British Airways, a Nafplion villa is an excellent place to escape to at any time of year. There is also a train line connected directly to Athens as well as long distance coach services if you would prefer not to drive during your Nafplion holiday.
