Holidaymakers looking for a place of amazing beauty should take a vacation at Montafon in the far western side of Austria. Close to the borders with Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Germany, this fabulous area has many interesting things for visitors to see and do. Montafon is situated in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains with lots of ski slopes. Holidaymakers can enjoy downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing on the 243 metres of marked runs at Montafon. In the summer months there are many trails for hikers and cyclists to explore. Golfers will find a few courses in the region including the club at Montafon, which also has a driving range. There are many fantastic places to visit in and around Montafon with great views to be found all around as well as historic buildings and attractions. Several museums are well worth visiting in the area including the Heritage Museum at Schruns, the Museum of Tourism at Gaschurn and the Museum of Mining at Silbertal. For holidaymakers keen to find out more about the history of Montafon, the Old Curate’s House is a fine museum to visit. There are several historic churches and religious sites at Montafon too. For example the baroque parish and pilgrimage church in Bartholomäberg is one of the most beautiful in the valley and dates back to 1729. Holidaymakers looking to travel a little further afield might like to try Vaduz in Liechtenstein, which is about 45 minute’s drive away. Here tourists can visit the Cathedral of St. Florin and see the historic castle that overlooks the city.
July and August are generally the warmest months in his part of Austria with average high temperatures of about 23 degrees centigrade. In winter the temperature can drop 2 or 3 degrees below zero and in December and January it can be much lower than this in the mountains. The winters here can bring about significant snow higher up.
This part of Austria is surrounded by mountains and therefore access from the Austrian airports is difficult and time consuming. Memmingerberg Airport (FMM) in southern Germany is approximately an hour and 30 minutes drive from Montafon. Ryanair operate flights to Memmingerberg from Dublin (DUB), Edinburgh (EDI), London-Stansted (STN), Oslo-Rygge (RYG), Porto (OPO), Rome-Ciampino (CIA), Stockholm-Skavsta (NYO), Valencia (VLC) amongst others. Europcar, Hertz and Sixt are car rental firms represented at the airport.
