Mirtos, or Myrtos as it is locally known, is a wonderful little village on the south coast of Crete. Located in the Lassithi Province of the island, Myrtos is one of the most locally celebrated villages in Crete. Known as a real haven of peace and beauty, as well as a hotbed for authentic local culture, a self catering Mirtos villa is a real treat for anyone just wanting to get away from it all.
Cafe culture is strong, and you will undoubtedly spend many happy hours in the Cretan sun simply watching the world drift by, and the waves gently lapping the shores with a coffee. Of course, this is if you can manage to drag yourself from the silver sands of Mirtos Beach. Mirtos Beach is a wonderful place from which to swim, with both sand and smooth rocks from which to enter the warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean.
However, those that want for a little activity from their Mirtos villa shall not be disappointed either. A holiday rental villa in Mirtos is a walker's dream, with an unlimited number of routes to walk in almost every direction, taking you along the varied coastline, into the bright flowers and fragrant groves of the countryside. You can even walk to into the mountains from a Mirtos apartment, and explore the ancient ruins that still litter the countryside.
During the evenings, Myrtos is a great place to go out and investigate local cuisine. You may well be invited to join in with the regular singing, dancing and general merriment that often seems to grip the village during the evening!
The most famous place to explore from a self catering Mirtos villa is the resort town of Elounda. Boasting stunning beaches and all the activity and service a visitor to the area could wish for, Elounda provides a wonderful one-stop-shop for anyone staying in a self catering Mirtos holiday home. The island of Mochlos also makes for an excellent daytrip from Mirtos accommodation.
The enviable Mediterranean climate Mirtos enjoys is a real bonus for those staying in Mirtos accommodation. The summer months are wonderfully hot, meaning swimming, siestas and sunbathing rate highly among the most popular activities on a Mirtos holiday, but the 'shoulder season', where walking and sightseeing take a more prominent role, last all the way through the winter.
The closest airport to a Mirtos apartment or villa is Heraklion International, which receives a regular influx of flights arriving direct from the UK. Having the use of a hire car whilst staying in Mirtos accommodation is recommended, if only so you can really explore the whole area.
