Sun, sea, activities and plenty of history can all be found in the wonderful province of Medio-Campidano on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, which sits just to the west of the Italian mainland. Located on the south-western side of the island this region has so much for visitors to enjoy. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments, B&Bs and campsites.
This region has some terrific beaches interspersed between small coves and cliffs 20-60 meters tall including the unspoiled Costa Verde. There are many water sports available around the island including surfing in the south west. Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, sailing, windsurfing and fishing are also very popular in the area.
Golf is quite popular on the island and there are several courses in south west Sardinia. There are plenty of places to try out and enjoy mountain biking and climbing too. With so much scenic beauty to find in the area it is a great place for walking, cycling and horse riding.
Numerous shops can be found amongst the 28 communities in the province, the largest of which is Villacidro. Cafes, restaurants, small shops and markets selling locally produced goods can be found in many of these communities. Tourists will be able to buy arts and crafts as well as other souvenirs.
There are several local museums in this part of Sardinia as well as fascinating archaeological finds such as the nuraghi complex of Su Nuxari a Barumini and the Roman Sardara Thermal Baths. There are many remains of the medieval churches and castles to be found in Medio-Campidano such as the castle and village of Sanluri.
Another fascinating feature is the Domus di Janus, which are re-historic chamber tombs to be found in Carbonia-Iglesias. Several areas of natural beauty can be found in the province such as Le Dune di Piscinas, which is a nature reserve in Arbus and well worth a visit. A ferry carries passengers to the nearby island of Corsica from Santa Teresa or from Cagliari holidaymakers can take a ferry to the Italian mainland.
Sardinia enjoys plenty of sunshine in the summer months and stays relatively mild in the winter months. The average high temperatures for July and August are 30 degrees centigrade, with 11 hours of sunshine per day in July. Most of the rainfall on the island occurs during the winter although temperatures reach a minimum high in January of 4 degrees centigrade but may be as high as 15C.
Cagliari Airport is approximately two hours away from Santa Maria Navarrese. From here there are flights to several Italian cities as well as major European cities such as London, Munich and Brussels. Ryanair has flights from several cities in Italy, Spain, Austria and Belgium. Taxi and car rentals firms are available at the airport.
