Mastiano is a small Italian hamlet a few miles north of the better known medieval walled town of Lucca. The countryside in this area is breathtaking with many medieval villages perched on the wooded hillsides. The area has a host of spas, palazzos and vineyards to explore and the beaches and cities of Pisa, Siena and Florence are within easy reach.
Puccini was born at Lucca and it is a wonderful place to attend an opera at the Torre del Lago. During the summer many concerts and musical events are performed in the amphitheatre at Lucca and there are several jazz festivals for those who prefer more contemporary music.
The seaside resorts along this coastline are quite superb and can be very busy in the height of the summer. Private beach clubs are one way to enjoy quieter beaches and the fee includes sun loungers and a shady umbrella.
Your holiday home in Mastiano is perfectly situated for exploring the nearby wooded hills. Walkers will love the beautiful mountain regions of Garfagnana for challenging hikes amidst stunning scenery.
The beautiful town of Volterra with its famous Cathedral is an 83km drive from your self catering villa in Mastiano, through some of the most beautiful countryside. The Cathedral houses a ciborium, or ornate canopy, paintings by Santa di Tito and a fresco of the Riding Magi byBenozzo Gozzoli.
FlorenceThe city of Florence, world-famous for its architecture and art, is just 84km east of your Mastinao holiday home. Art lovers will revel in the art museums and the rich heritage in the many churches in Florence. The Duomo has the largest brick-built dome in the world and visitors can climb to the top for excellent views over the city. The nearby Campanile or bell tower and the baptistery buildings are both wonderful sights and the shops on the Ponte Vecchio are also worth visiting.
PisaThe most famous city of Pisa is just 39 km from your Mastiano villa. The leaning tower has defied gravity and several earth tremors over the last eight centuries and now leans 3.9m or 12 feet from its perpendicular position. This bell tower is a beautiful building but there are plenty more attractions in Pisa too.
