The small village of Maria Alm is a picturesque and traditional village located in the heart of the High King Mountain ski area. It is less crowded than other resorts in the area and renting a holiday chalet will offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside, all in an authentic and peaceful setting. Winter activities are available in Maria Alm and there is much more on offer besides. So if you are looking for a holiday rental chalet that has peace, picture postcard views and plenty to do, then Maria Alm is the village for you.
Winter sports are available in abundance in the village. Visitors can indulge in activities including skiing, tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Maria Alm also has many trails which are used for torch lit guided walks in the winter evenings. No visit to the village would be complete without taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride – it is the best way to see the beautiful village and arrive at your Maria Alm chalet in style. During the summer months, other activities are available for visitors including fishing on the nearby lake, horse-riding, mountain biking and bowling.
About 35 kilometres to the east of Maria Alm is the city of Bischofshofen. This city has a lot of history, culture and sport and is worth a visit. There are many trails in and immediately around the city and a favourite is a walk past the natural monument, Gainfield Waterfall. Visitors can also enjoy some ice skating and Bischofshofen is home to a large and famous ski jump, which is used in the final leg of the International Four Hills Tournament every year.
Other things to see and do in the town include a mining museum, a town museum which has artefacts spanning over 5,000 years of local history and the ruined castle of Pongowe, which gave its name to the region.
Maria Alm enjoys a pleasant Continental climate thanks to its proximity to the Austrian-Italian border. This means that visitors can experience temperatures of up to 30°C in the summer months. Although there is snow still to be enjoyed on the higher slopes during the summer, this is the time to experience the other activities that Maria Alm has on offer. During the winter months, snow is more frequent and temperatures can drop to a chilly -6°C. This is when it is best to wrap up warm and enjoy the snow-based activities that the village has accessible to visitors.
