Set amongst some of the largest and densest pinewood forests in Europe, Los Canos de Meca is a small, picturesque village on the Costa de la Luz, Spain. The settlement lies to the east of Cape Trafalgar, and around an hour’s drive from Cadiz. A fantastic beach and some high-quality, secluded holiday rental accommodation make Los Canos de Meca a romantic vacation destination that is particularly popular with couples.
Los Canos de Meca is one of the very finest destinations in the region for a relaxing beach break, being situated on its own in an attractive corner of the Costa de la Luz, and boasting a number of enjoyable activities to partake in. Just some of the options that can be taken up in the local area are horse riding, hiking and golfing, though there are many more depending on your interests.
The main draw of the village is the excellent Las Dunas beach, which boasts a large stretch of fine yellow sands and clean waters. An especially enjoyable walk along the beach can be enjoyed at sunrise or sunset, and will lead you to Cape Trafalgar – the site of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 – which is marked by a lighthouse. The beach is a great area to try your hand at wind surfing and kite surfing, and does not get overly busy, even in the height of summer.
There are enough facilities in Los Canos de Meca to be able to stock up for a self-catering holiday, but those looking for a larger supermarket will need to make the short journey to Barbate, which is also the home of a good-quality fruit, vegetable and fish market.
Just a few kilometres up the road from Canos de Meca is Barbate, the home of the second largest coastal reserve in the region, and an area rich in wildlife. This is a hiker’s, walker’s and nature lover’s paradise – but then the same could be said about the vast majority of this beautiful part of Spain. Other places worth visiting in the Costa de la Luz include Conil de la Frontera (15km) and Vejer de la Frontera (16km).
Los Canos de Meca accommodation is a great place to be during summer months, when temperatures soar to above 30C on the majority of days, and temperatures of around 35C are far from uncommon. Spring is a particularly good time to visit, when the days are warm and sunny, but not too humid.
Jerez Airport (airport code XRY, also known as La Parra Airport) is 94km north of Los Canos de Meca, and the nearest airport to offer flights from the UK. Ryanair and Thomas Cook Airlines both offer services to this destination, with journey time from the UK being around two hours.
