Nestled on the south-eastern coastline of the island of Barbados is the peaceful town of Long Bay. Sitting within the boundaries of the St. Philip parish on the island, Long Bay is a hidden gem for travellers. It is tranquil and peaceful but is still within close proximity to the sights and sounds that Barbados has to offer. Renting a villa in Long Bay will mean an undisturbed and luxurious holiday. You can come and go as you please without feeling as though you are in an area of mass tourism.
The first place to visit once you have rented your Long Bay villa is the beach. With a 500 metre strip of white, sandy beach and radiantly blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Long Bay Beach is perfect for those looking for sun and watersports. Activities available at the beach include swimming, diving, sailing, fishing, surfing, water skiing and jet skiing. Other vigorous activities that are available within the immediate area of Long Bay include horse riding, tennis, golf, paragliding and cycling.
If you can tear yourself away from your gorgeous rental villa and the beach at Long Bay, it is worth taking the short walk east to Sam Lord’s Castle. Now a hotel, this beautiful Georgian mansion sits right on the shoreline of a wonderful unspoilt beach. The mansion was built in the year 1820 by the notorious buccaneer, Sam Hall Lord. The building was apparently built with ill-gotten funds from plundering ships that ran aground on the land after following lanterns that were hung on coconut trees around the mansion.
Located in the heart of the St. Philip countryside is the only Great House that you will find on the island of Barbados, namely Sunbury Plantation House. It was built in 1660 by one of the first settlers on the island, Matthew Chapman. Visiting Sunbury Plantation House is a wonderful experience due to the fact that all of the rooms are open to the viewing public. Here you will see antique furniture, lavish Victorian decoration and a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages. There are also wonderful gardens to be explored around the house.
Visitors to Long Bay will not be disappointed in terms of the weather. The town is blessed with a moderate tropical climate with average daytime temperatures reaching between 25°C and 30°C during the summer months. This makes Long Bay the perfect location to have a luxurious holiday rental to enjoy the outdoors. The wet season runs from June until November with an average rainfall amount of 40 inches. Due to its location the island is less likely to be at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms too.
Travellers to Barbados will land on the only airport on the island, Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), which is approximately 8 kilometres from Long Bay. Airlines such as BMI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways all offer regular affordable flights to the island. Travellers can fly from various UK airports including Gatwick (LGW), London Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN), Leeds (LBA), Birmingham (BHX) and Aberdeen (ABZ).
