Make a holiday villa in Suwannee River your home away from home

Suwannee River holiday villas sit in the tiny fishing village of Suwannee, located on the Gulf Coast at the mouth of the Suwannee River. Just a couple of miles from the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, Suwannee River holiday apartments and villas are perfect for those who enjoy a quiet coastal river setting, especially if accompanied by the lazy bob of a fishing float or the gentle whir of a reel. All rentals at Suwannee River are equipped with air-conditioning to cool guests down after a lazy day of floating, nature watching or fishing, and most have satellite or cable TV and a DVD player to relax with while that day's catch sizzles on the BBQ.

Things to do

-Watersports: Kayaks and canoes are available to rent within walking distance of Suwannee River holiday accommodation, and perfect for exploring the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. Providing a platform to fish from, or getting to a hard to reach spot, both fresh and salt water fishing can be catered for here. There is also a marina with houseboats for hire.

-Nightlife: Nightlife, as one might expect, is virtually non-existent near Suwannee River holiday rentals. There are a couple of places to eat, but if guests do feel the need to let their hair down, Cedar Key is just a short drive to the south, with a much more diverse selection; especially if seafood is preferred and a laid-back vibe appreciated.

-Nature: There are 53,000 acres of pine forest, natural salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps and tidal flats at Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most unique and undeveloped river deltas in the United States. Guided tours are offered, as well as access via kayak or canoe available in Suwannee itself.

-Beaches: There are no beaches at Suwannee per se, but Cedar Key just to the south is awash with them, many of them on the hundreds of surrounding uninhabited islands and only reachable by boat. A far cry from the commercial beach culture found elsewhere in Florida, it's perfect for those who like the seclusion.

Weather in Suwannee River

The tendency is to think that Florida may get too hot in the summer to be a tolerable prospect for a holiday, but the temperatures really don't get that high, even when compared to the Mediterranean. With so much water around, temperatures rarely hit the mid-30s. An average winter's day, by comparison, hovers around the low-20s. A side effect of so much water, however, is the humidity, which can make things feel hotter than they actually are. The summer humidity also leads to frequent afternoon thunderstorms, which account for most of the annual rainfall.

Travel to Suwannee River

For direct flights, Orlando and Tampa international airports are the only real options, with Orlando at 171 miles away and Tampa at 156 miles away. Flying in and hiring a car is by far the most convenient way to travel in America, thanks to affordable petrol and an efficient road system. Gainesville has a regional airport only 71 miles away from Suwannee if changing planes isn't an issue. There is no public transport in Suwannee, as one might expect, as in a town of only 300 people, everywhere is accessible on foot.
