New Smyrna Beach is one of Florida’s oldest cities, along with St Augustine, just up the coast. The Timucan Native Americans had almost vanished from the area by 1767 when Dr Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician settled in the area, naming it after his wife’s birthplace, Smyrna in Turkey. The area has a rich history which is complemented by the beautiful sandy beaches, restaurants and shopping in this charming waterfront area, located between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
One of Florida’s best beaches is the 13-mile stretch of pristine sand at New Smyrna Beach. Sunbathing, swimming, walking and even cycling can be enjoyed on these firm sands. When the wind is up, the Atlantic offers perfect surfing conditions for amateurs and pros alike.
The area around your New Smyrna Beach condo is renowned for its birds, particularly during the winter months when many birds fly down from the northern states. There are more than 400 species of birds and the nearby Canaveral National Seashore is a protected bird sanctuary.
River cruising on the Orange River is nice and relaxing, especially if you enjoy fishing. Alternatively, book a fishing charter and head out to sea. The annual FishStock Tournament is held here on Memorial Day each year.
Just a short drive from your New Smyrna Beach apartment is the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral. Exhibitions, displays, an IMAX theatre and simulators all show the history of space exploration from this interesting launch site. There may even be a shuttle launch during your stay so checkout the KSC website.
This north Florida coastal city is the oldest in the US. Located in the historic Old Post Office Building off Canal Street, this local museum tells the story of New Smyrna’s development of the Mediterranean indentured colonists under Dr Andrew Turnbull.
Florida’s Atlantic Coast enjoys hot summers and mild sunny winters making it very popular with visitors in all seasons.
