On land you could follow some of the perimeter of the lake, via a trail that extends for more than 70 miles. Alternative there are routes that snake off into the forest, passing through atmospheric Douglas fir groves. If you arrive at a Gardner Mountain cabin in the winter then you’ll be located close to one of the area’s premier ski resorts – Heavenly is ideal for intermediate skiers, with around half of its 97 ski runs labelled blue, with a total skiable area of more than 5,000 acres. Other resorts within easy reach include Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe. All year round the south shore of Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for gaming, with casinos close by at Horizon, Montbleu and Harrah’s.
Lake Tahoe’s North Shore is a short car journey away from Gardner Mountain, and offers a similar array of outdoor recreation and entertainment. You could head here to enjoy the mountain resort at Northstar – a premier ski destination in winter, and home to an excellent golf course in the summer months.
