Experience Florida island life with holiday accommodation at Admiralty House on Marco Island. HomeAway.co.uk's Admiralty House apartments and villas are right on the beach, with a palm-shaded seafront pool and BBQ area to enjoy, staging views out over the Gulf of Mexico. Most Admiralty House holiday homes have air-conditioning, washer/dryer, dishwasher and cable/satellite television, but only a few have wheelchair access. Holiday rentals at Admiralty House are convenient for everything south Florida has to offer, including the Florida Keys and Everglades.
-Everglades: The Everglades are a huge area of tropical wetlands lying to the east of your Admiralty House rental, and extending from Orlando down to the Keys. An amazing interdependent variety of ecosystems means the area is home to diverse wildlife, making this a must see in southern Florida.
-Beaches: Marco Island is a popular holiday destination for good reason; the beaches are some of the finest you'll find anywhere. Snow-white sands, warm gulf waters, fascinating flora and fauna and watersports activities to keep you busy when the sun lounging gets old.
-Florida Keys: The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago off the southern tip of Florida, linked by bridges carrying the 127 mile long Overseas Highway section of US Route 1, running all the way up to Maine. Traverse this historic route and visit the famous islands that were home to such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.
-Watersports: With such an extensive system of canals, rivers, lakes and shorelines, Marco Island has more than enough water-based activities to keep even the most ardent water rat happy. Boating, fishing and sailing are obvious choices, as are skiing, surfing, and dolphin-watching.
-Marco Island Historical Museum: Come face-to-face with southwestern Florida's unique history with exhibits exploring the lifestyle of the Calusa Indians and earlier Muspa people. Fabulous finds such as the Key Marco Cat are on display, one of the most significant artifacts in North American archaeology.
Rainy in the summer, dry in the winter, most of the rain falls as heavy tropical cloudbursts, however, ensuring most of your summer break will be drenched in sun. Temperatures are typical for Florida, with short, mild winters and long, hot summers, with highs in the low to mid 30s Celsius. Winter average highs are around the low 20s C, which makes Admiralty House on Marco Island an ideal year round holiday destination.
Southwest Florida International Airport is the nearest air access to Marco Island, though Miami is doable in a pinch at 120 miles away, compared to 47 miles for the former. However, Miami International Airport also has the advantage of direct flights to Europe. Your best bet is to fly and drive, of course, because American public transport tends to be quite inefficient. Taxiing or shuttling could be an option, but the cost would be extremely high. Nearby Naples does have a Greyhound station, however, if you're suddenly gripped with wanderlust. There is no public rail access.
