The Engelberg ski resort is a magnificent year round destination, offering one of the biggest vertical range in the Alps. With excellent sporting options throughout all four seasons, including an excellent glacier for skiing, a holiday rental in Engelberg delivers guaranteed snow, vibrant après ski and enough testing skiing and snowboarding to keep even the hardiest of snow sports enthusiasts happy all year round. An Engelberg ski pass gives you access to 82km of downhill pistes, 41km of cross-country skiing trails and a huge snow park.
The Engelberg ski resort has the second best snow record in the whole of the Alps, and from its location right in the very heart of Switzerland, the skiing is quite phenomenal. The skiing available on an Engelberg ski pass is not for the faint hearted. The majority of the skiing in the area is classified as black runs, suitable for both skiers and snowboarders, especially the runs accessed by the first revolving gondola, the Rotair, which gives you an unrivalled view of the absolutely staggering scenery, hopefully helping to take your mind off the fearsome pistes you are about to tackle! Anyone wishing to really get the most out of their Engelberg ski pass, the infamous Laub off-piste area is one of the best in Switzerland, and there are plenty of local guides waiting to take you. If the close season seems almost unbearable, a holiday rental chalet in Engelberg can quench your thirst for skiing. There is an excellent glacier on Mount Titlis, perfect for year round skiing.
During the summer months, the Engelberg ski resort doesn’t slow down. Skiers still flock to the glacier to ski in the sun, and walkers, mountain bikers and rock climbers snap up self catering Engelberg accommodation in order to head out into the mountains. The walking and climbing is absolutely sensational in Engelberg, with some of the finest trails taking you past the famous Benedictine Monastery, which is well worth a visit in itself. Mountain bikes can be hired from the train station, and the Engelberg Sports Complex organised adventure sports from bungee jumping to canyoning, abseiling to white water rafting.
Whether you visit the Engelberg ski resort in summer or in winter, the short trip from an Engelberg property rental to Lake Lucerne is truly worth it. The lake is impossibly picturesque, with charming Alpine villages dotting the shores, between the glass like surface of the lake and the snow capped peaks that surround Lake Lucerne. There is little as romantic as taking one of the regular paddle steamers across the lake, and certainly nothing compares to diner in a lake side restaurant.
Although winter is obviously cold in the Engelberg ski resort, summer conditions may come as a surprise. Temperatures are blissfully warm, with daily temperatures in July and August reaching the mid 20’s (˚C) on most days. Due to the altitude, conditions can be unpredictable, but for the majority of the time, the summer sun shines, making the whole landscape awash with colour.
Zurich Airport (ZRH) is just and hour and a half from Engelberg. There are frequent direct flights from the UK, provided by Aer Lingus and British Airways. The trip from the airport to a holiday rental chalet in Engelberg can be completed on public transport, as there is an excellent train network requiring a change in Lucerne.
