The town of Gros Islet lies in the far north of the Caribbean island St Lucia. The Rodney Bay Area of the small town caters to the tourists visiting the island with exclusive beachfront properties, hotels and apartments. The crystal clear Caribbean water, overwhelmingly beautiful island scenery, as well as the party vibe of the town, make Gros Islet holidays a popular choice for those visiting St Lucia.
The main attraction in Gros Islet is the Friday Night Street Party, otherwise know as the “Jump Up”. This weekly party features sidewalk barbecues and vendors, and revelers can dance in the streets to the reggae, calypso and zouk music until the wee hours of the morning. During the other nights of the week you can visit some of the many clubs in the area. Renting one of the holiday apartments in Gros Islet is a must if you enjoy a good party.
If you are looking for a quieter Gros Islet holiday experience then you can visit the peaceful Pigeon Island National Park, where you can hike up signal hill. The view from the top is truly breathtaking. There are also military ruins from Colonial times as well as from World War 2. Pigeon Island is also home to the world famous St Lucia Jazz Festival each May. The island was artificially joined to the mainland at the Rodney Bay Marina.
At the Marina you can hire a boat and go sailing in the spectacular blue water. Other water activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing and kayaking. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land you can sunbathe on one of the sandy beaches (Reduit, Windjammer, or Vigie) or relax in your Gros Islet villa.
No trip to St Lucia would be complete without taking a trip to the world’s only drive-in volcano at Sulphur Springs Park near Soufrière on the southwest coast of the island. The small town is also home to the Diamond Botanical Gardens with its picturesque Diamond Falls and mineral baths. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty the island has to offer.
If you are renting a Gros Islet villa and can pull yourself away from the stunning beaches, a great way to explore the island is to go on a plantation tour. Various sugar, cocoa and fruit plantations offer tours where you can watch how the products are processed and enjoy some of the local cuisine.
Temperatures remain between 20°C and 30°C throughout the year. The steady trade winds bring cool reprieve from the high temperatures, which means that any time is a good time to take a last minute rental villa on a Gros Islet holiday.
There are two airports on the island of St Lucia. The first is George F Charles airport in the capital Castries, which is a 20-minute drive from Gros Islet. The other is Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) at Vieux Fort, which is on the southern tip of island and is a 90-minute drive to your Gros Islet accommodation. Airlines that offer flights to St Lucia include BMI, British Airways, First Choice Airways and Ryanair.
