Holidaymakers looking for some Caribbean sunshine on one of the smaller quieter islands may like to visit Turtle Beach. This is a wonderfully scenic place on the island of St Kitts, which is situated in the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and holiday homes.
Turtle Beach is on the south east peninsula of the island and has a wonderful sandy beach ideally for relaxing in the sun. This is a great destination for swimming in the warm sea as well as various watersports such as surfing, kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing and jet skiing. There are some beautiful areas to be enjoyed by hiking or cycling, especially along the coastline. The only golf course on the island is the 18-hole St. Kitts Royal Golf Club and there is another located on the neighbouring island of Nevis. Fishing trips are also popular here with the waters around the island filled with tuna, wahoo, dorado, kingfish, barracuda, shark, snapper and mahi mahi. Visitors with a head for heights may like to try the zip-line tour adventures offered here. There are numerous bars, inns and restaurants located close to Turtle Beach mainly serving West Indian cuisine although there are a few Oriental, Italian and seafood restaurants on St Kitts too. The island has markets from which self catering holidaymakers can purchase fresh food. Visitors will find several places selling gifts and souvenirs such as clothing, artwork and local handicrafts.
St Kitts has many historic buildings including Brimstone Hill Fortress and Charles Fort. There are numerous religious buildings worth visiting such as Springfield Cemetery and Chapel and St George’s Anglican Church. Visitors may also like to take a look at some of the plantation houses here like Lodge Great House and Shadwell Great House. A ferry service takes passengers from St Kitts to Nevis, where there are other interesting attractions such as the volcano and the capital Charleston.
The climate here is tempered somewhat by the sea breeze but remains constant throughout the year at an average of between 24 and 26 degrees centigrade. Whilst it can rain throughout the year the wettest time is between July and November, which also happens to be the hurricane season. The humidity remains fairly low too at around 71 percent.
Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) on St Kitts is about 13 kilometres from Turtle Beach. It receives flights direct from Antigua, Atlanta, Charlotte, London, Miami, Nevis, New York, Philadelphia, Saint Maarten and San Juan. Taxis are available outside the terminal. No car rentals companies are based at the airport but firms such as Avis, TDC and Sunshine provide a free pick up service from the airport.
