Things to do

-Local history. On holiday in Monforte del Cid you should pay a visit to the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, which, from the 1200s, is among the oldest religious buildings in the province. What’s especially interesting is the Romanesque bell-tower, which incorporates the remnants of a Muslim fortress. The rest of the old town has buildings dating back as far as the 1100s, with both Christian and Islamic styles.

-Beaches. The coastline, just a few minutes away by car, has kilometres of immaculate sandy beaches to discover. On Alicante’s waterfront you’ll find Playa del Postiguet, which is a 900 metre-long curve of golden sand, dominated by the rocky Monte Bencantil, and convenient to bars, shops and restaurants. Just north of the centre is Playa de San Juan, a sumptuous, seven-kilometre beach rated as one of the best in Spain.

-Golf. The highly-rated Club de Golf Alenda is on the road to Alicante from Monforte del Cid and was designed in an environmentally-friendly way, adhering to the existing contours of the land. Also sustainable is the championship course at El Plantio, which uses recycled water for irrigation, and has lovely views of both the inland mountains and the coast.

-Food and drink. Monforte del Cid sits in a valley surrounded by vineyards, but is best known for the variety of distilled liqueurs it produces – coffee, aniseed, cinnamon, lavender and tangerine flavours are all made here. Regional dishes include caldo de cielo, which is cod with an egg soup, and tarts with a tomato and sardines.

-Outdoor activities. The Sierra del Maigmo lies just to the north of Monforte del Cid, and due to its high elevation gets a bit more rainfall than the surrounding region. This creates an interesting eco-system, with rich forests of pine and oak that are waiting to be explored on foot or by bike. There’s also a good network of walking routes that can be joined just outside the town.
