-Beaches. Some of the island’s best beaches can be found on Majorca’s north and east coasts. Alcudia is an undoubted highlight, and with its big expanse of fine white sand and gentle, shallow waters it’s just perfect for families with young children. The beach at Port de Pollensa is even closer and offers a range of watersports and great mountain views.
-Walking. North Majorca’s rugged landscape is great for exploring on foot, with a large network of trails that extend across the Serra de Tramuntana. A good local walk is Puig de Pollensa, which refers to both the name of the hill and the historic monastery that sits near its summit. Spectacular headland, Cap de Formentor is another great choice.
-Food and drink. Holidaying in El Vilar it would be well worth taking the chance to sample some typical Mallorquin food. The two most famous are Sobrassada, which is like a soft chorizo, and Ensaimada, a sweet pastry. There are some fabulous local wines, and in Pollensa there’s an excellent weekly food market on Wednesdays.
-Golf. You’re never far from a golf course on Mallorca, with upwards of 20 choices. There are two within a few minutes in the car of El Vilar – Alcanada, which has the unique feature of being situated next to the sea, and Pollensa, which is set in scenic and hilly terrain and features first-class facilities.
-Day trips. In El Vilar many of Majorca’s other top destinations are within a comfortable drive. Palma, the capital, is a bustling modern city with history, dining and excellent shopping, at both boutiques and popular chains. Nearby Pollensa, Valldemossa and Soller are all picturesque old towns with stone buildings.
Mallorca set in a Mediterranean climate zone. This makes for warm or moderately warm weather for much of the year. Temperatures tend to his the low-20s as early as April and May, and daily highs increase by the month until they peak in the low-30s in July and August. There’s very little rainfall throughout the summer, until around October which a month known for its storms. Visit an El Vilar holiday villa in winter and you can expect mild conditions, with plenty of clear days and daily highs in the low-teens n December and January.
You can get to holiday cottages in El Vilar from the UK by flying to Palma International (PMI), which is served by a host of airlines flying from cities throughout the UK, mainland Spain and Europe. The airport is around a half an hour by road to the southwest of Pollensa, and you’ll be able to follow the PM-27 for much of the journey. The roads on the island are extensive and well-developed, and there are also both public and private bus companies offering connections between Mallorca’s towns.
