The Costa Tropical of the Granada province in Spain has some of the most picturesque beaches in Andalusia. It is not as well known as its western neighbour, the Costa del Sol, and therefore offers a refuge from the crowds in ideal surroundings. The mountains here reach right down to the rugged coastline, where a series of bays and inlets offer quiet beaches to relax and recuperate on. Inland from the Costa Tropical is the charming Lecrin Valley. Just 30 minutes from the coastal resorts, it has hardly been touched by the tourist boom, so a phrase book is essential!
La Herradura is one of the best beaches on the Costa Tropical. It is a quiet, unspoilt and very beautiful beach set in a bay, where time seems to stand still.
The village of Salobrena is an idyllic Andalusian whitewashed town, with a stunning beach and an extremely impressive Moorish castle which attracts visitors from miles around. The town clings to a large rock outcrop set just back from the coastline, providing spectacular views of the sea. The town also provides a great base for skiing in the Alpujarra, and from October to April, you can ski by day, and relax on the beach in the evening! Golf, tennis, mountain biking and fishing is very popular here as well as snorkelling and diving on the hugely successful artificial reef.
Almunecar is an increasingly vibrant beach resort town, but also offers the Loro Sexi bird park, which delights visitors with 1,500 species of birds. There is also a rich history here, with multiple Roman ruins, the San Miguel Castle and Almunecar Castle, with its world famous pottery.
Motril is the largest town on the Costa Tropical. It is the main service provider for the Costa, and is a thriving sport and leisure town, offering easy access to both the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the beaches of the Costa Tropical. A Costa Tropical holiday cottage or villa with a pool here also acts as a base to discover Morocco by boat. Snorkelling, diving, and golf at the Los Moriscos golf course add to Motril’s attractiveness.
Water sports and diving are extremely popular along the Costa Tropical, especially from the protected cove of Punta de la Mona, where the clear water allows you to see a variety of aquatic animals without too much effort!
The Lecrin Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with lemon, almond and orange plantations giving the Sierra Nevada foothills a colourful cover. Many of the 17 villages in the valley are Moorish in origin, with spectacular architecture and exciting fiestas. A holiday rental in the Lecrin Valley is the perfect place to relax and explore this magical region at your own pace.
Europe’s most southern ski resort in Sierra Nevada was host to the 1996 World Championships, and has all the top-class facilities of a French alpine resort, with the added attraction of beaches just 30 minutes away.
The Costa Tropical has a Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and mild winters allowing year round holidays, where beach, golf and skiing holidays can be taken.
This part of the coast is an hour and a half from Malaga Airport (AGP), but a Costa Tropical property or holiday rental in the Lecrin Valley is well worth the travel.
