Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve, has evidence of settlements on the land reaching back to 1,000BC, and the old town is awash with fascinating sites from throughout the ages! Surrounded by rich colours of orange orchards and almond groves, the town of Silves is a sleepy town surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Monchique Mountains, perfect for an exploration and investigation of the Algarve.
Although many of the town’s most important historical remains were destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, the impressive sandstone Silves Castle remained strong, due to the huge Moorish walls which support it. Silves Castle is the largest castle in the Algarve, and is certainly among the most beautiful. The Museu Arqueologico has managed to collate and display various artefacts from throughout the town’s history, and pieced them together for visitors to get a clearer understanding of Silves’ history and influence. The Roman Ponte Romana and 13th Century Cathedral also make for interesting viewing if you have the time whilst staying in a Silves property.
Despite a huge amount being made out of Silves’ ancient heritage, there is much more to taking accommodation in Silves than touring historical sites. A Silves property or villa in Silves’ outskirts is the perfect base for golfing holidays to the Algarve or for exploration of the Algarve. Centrally located, accommodation in Silves can be used for holidays in the beach, in the Sierra de Monichique or exploring the large Algarve towns of Loule, Portimao, Albufeira or Lagoa. The famous Algarve beaches of Carvoeiro are just a 15 minute drive from self catering accommodation in Silves, with all their attractions and sports facilities.
The golf courses of Vale de Milho, Quinta do Gramacho and Vale da Pinta can all be reached very easily from a Silves villa too. There are public courses dotted across the countryside, so finding a round from Silves accommodation will not prove difficult.
Lagoa is only 8km from accommodation in Silves, and is one of the most picturesque towns you will be able to find in Portugal. Located at the summit of one of the coastal hills, Lagoa is also a magnificent base for golf and sightseeing, and the golden beaches of Ferragudo and Carvoeiro are just miles away.
Summers in Silves are very warm, and Silves villas with pools are hugely sought after during June, July and August. Temperatures from October until April are cooler, but remain blissfully warm, with monthly averages staying between 15 and 22˚C, perfect for walking, golfing or cycling throughout the area.
Located just 30 minutes from Faro Airport (FAO), a holiday villa in Silves is very easily reached. Faro receives multiple daily flights from across the UK, provided by a range of luxury or ‘no frills’ airlines. When you arrive in Faro, it is probably a good idea to take a hire car, not only to reach your accommodation in Silves, but also so that you can easily reach the beaches or attractions in the Silves area without having to rely on public transport, meaning you can get the most from the flexibility and space provided by taking a private Silves property for your holiday.
