The Olhao region of the Algarve is the most western part of the Algarve’s Mediterranean coastline. Water sport enthusiasts will probably already know about the Olhao region, as it is arguably the best place in the whole of the Algarve for sailing and windsurfing. The Olhao region sums up what life in Portugal is all about, with beautiful old buildings, the sea, traditional livelihoods and modern, luxurious facilities.
The Olhao region is a favourite destination for windsurfers, who flock to holiday rentals in Olhao to take advantage of the near perfect conditions. The beaches which surround the area also have magnificent facilities for sailing, canoeing and scuba diving, aimed at all levels of ability and experience. On land, the Olhao region is not short of golf courses either, so as long as you remember your handicap certificate, you will easily be able to get a round in.
The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is just a few miles inland from the coast, and is considered to be the most important wildlife centre in the Algarve, encompassing over 60km of coastal habitats where a huge range of animal and bird species thrive. The park is a perfect place to walk or cycle, revelling in the natural diversity of the unspoilt Algarve coastline. During the summer, regular boat trips take visitors out to the islands of Fuzeta and Armona which lie within the boundaries of the park. The islands are very peaceful and largely unvisited, but they are well worth seeing if you have the time from your Olhao villa rental.
No stay in the Olhao region would be complete without visiting the exquisite seafood restaurants that adorn the area, or buying unbeatably fresh fish from the market and trying your hand at a local recipe in your self catering Olhao villa or apartment.
The town of Olhao itself is one of the Algarve’s main fishing ports, and has remained gloriously traditional, with colourful wooden fishing boats decorating the edge of the bright blue sea, and whitewashed, stately villas and townhouses make up the centre of town, giving it a delightful, romantic atmosphere. Olhao, Portugal, is most famous for its markets, which are the most lively and beautiful of the whole Algarve, selling a vast array of seafood, local honey, fruit and livestock.
The small country town of Moncarapacho radiates charm. As soon as you arrive in the town, the refreshingly laid back pace of life will instantly relieve you of any stress from your journey. It has all the facilities you would need from accommodation in the Olhao region, but there is not a huge amount to do in the town itself. However, a rental villa here is the ideal base to explore the treasures of the region in absolute tranquillity.
Pechao is similar to Moncarapacho in many respects. Beautifully peaceful and offering all the facilities and services you could wish for, Pechao is an ideal base for access to not only the coast, but the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa too.
The climate of the Algarve is well documented, making it an ideal year round holiday destination. During the winter, travel costs are vastly reduced however, making a villa in Olhao a perfect solution for a last minute golf holiday. In the summer, temperatures can soar to around 40°C.
Any of the holiday accommodation in Olhao is just a few miles from Faro Airport (FAO), which is a major hub for flights to Portugal from the UK. With so many cheap flights from the UK, it should not pose any problems finding a cheap and convenient flight to Olhao.
