Things to do
-Beaches. There’s a fabulous choice of beaches close to Ericeira, with some forty to be found within a short drive of the town. Four of these have been awarded Blue Flag status – the best for families are Praia do Sul, Praia do Norte and Praia dos Pescadores.
-Surfing. Ericeira is a world surfing reserve, which makes up around eight kilometres of the area’s coastline. So as well as having an impressive concentration of beaches with world-class surfing conditions, Ericeira is geared towards surfing tourism, with lots of local business offering lessons and equipment hire. The best beaches include Cave, Coxos and Pedra Branca.
-Excursions. There are some excellent options for day-trips and excursions - close by is Mafra, home to the National Palace, which dates to the 1700s and is considered one of the most important pieces of Baroque architecture in the country. Sinta is about 30 minutes to the south, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Regaleira Palace essential.
-Lisbon. There’s far more in the Lisbon are than you could hope to fit into several days, but highlights here include Belem and its Jeronimos Monastery, which is a spectacular and intricate Gothic building. Alfama and its narrow medieval streets is also essential – it’s one of the oldest parts of city and features the 17th Century Santa Engracia Church.
-Gastronomy. Being next to the Atlantic as well as a major fishing harbour it follows that the quality of fish and seafood here should be top notch, and can be enjoyed at more than 30 restaurants in the area. There are other local specialities, like the dessert, pastel de nata, a kind of cream cake.
Weather in Ericeira
Ericeira beach apartments are in a subtropical-Mediterranean climate zone, with daily highs that usually get above 20 degrees between April and October. From June to September the weather is especially warm, with highs in the mid-20s and more, and almost no rainfall in July and August. Winters here are very mild, with temperatures often reaching the mid-teens during the day, and rarely slipping below eight or nine degrees at night. Winter is by far the wettest time of year with around 15 rainy days per month from November to March.
Travel to Ericeira
Holiday homes in Ericieira can be reached via Lisbon’s Portela International Airport (LIS). You can get there via both low-cost and premium airlines from across the UK and Europe. By road the A8 and A21 motorways will get you from Lisbon to Ericeira. If you’re not driving a rental car then taxis are a quick if relatively expensive way of reaching your destination. For a cheaper alternative there’s the bus, which offers a regular service and takes just over an hour to get to Ericeira.
