Located in fabulous rolling hills in the Portuguese countryside, the cobbled streets and traditional white-washed houses of Alte give a true taste of traditional Portuguese life to visitors. An apartment in the town offers the perfect haven for couples on a romantic getaway. At the same time, self-catering villas around the outskirts are perfect for families on a summer holiday and offer a great alternative to the Algarve’s many bustling resorts.

Beach lovers will also not be disappointed with a break in Alte, which despite benefiting from beautiful inland scenery is still less than a half-hour drive from Portugal’s stunning south coast. Several of the Algarve’s major resorts are found nearby, including Vilamoura, Quarteria and Albufeira.

Although only a small town, Alte does have several of its own bars and restaurants, many of which are open late into the evening. Most of these serve up local wines, beers and of course port, as well as freshly prepared local fare such as pork with clams or cherry chicken.
The small picture-postcard town of Loule is a 30-minute drive from Alte, and although much of the old town was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755, still captivates visitors with what remains. The town is home to a famous carnival in February, considered to be one of the best in Portugal, and the Gypsy markets on a Saturday well worth a look.
