Holidaymakers looking for an exciting destination in the mountains need look no further than Zabljak in Montenegro. This little city is located in the centre of the Durmitor Mountain and offers many fantastic things for people to do and see. Visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments and chalets.
Zabljak is a particularly fantastic place to visit in the winter as Durmitor Mountain offers several good ski slopes such as Savin Kuk, Stuoc and Javorovaca. Cross country and downhill skiing as well as snowboarding can be done here. Even outside the winter season there is plenty for holidaymakers to do on Durmitor including mountaineering and mountain biking.
The scenic area in and around Zabljak also has several hiking paths. Holidaymakers can also try cycling and horse riding during the warmer months. The area lends itself to some good watersports on the Tara River with rafting one of the most popular activities here. There are areas of the river to try some fishing too.
Zabljak has several small bars, cafes and restaurants giving the opportunity for visitors to try the local cuisine. The area has few shops but self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from local markets and grocery stores. Visitors will also find some charming little shops selling gifts and souvenirs.
Zabljak and the Durmitor Mountain region have some wonderful places to visit including the 18 glacier lakes. The most beautiful and closest to Zabljak is Black Lake, which is just three kilometres away. Visitors should go to Tara Canyon, which is the deepest canyon in Europe, the second deepest in the world and is on the UNECSO World Heritage List. There are some interesting buildings in the Durmitor National Park area such as the 12th century Ostrog Monastery, which sits on a cliff face 900 metres above the Zeta Valley. The city of Niksic is about 80 kilometres from Zabljak and is an interesting historic place with many cultural monuments from the Illyrian and Roman period. Saborna Church is worth visiting and is surrounded by a beautiful park.
July and August are the warmest months of the year with average high temperatures of 20 degrees centigrade. The coldest month is January with average highs of -1 degrees centigrade and lows of -8 degrees, with snow highly likely during the winter months. The level of rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year but November is usually the wettest month with an average of 130mm.
Podgorica Airport (TGD) is approximately three hours drive from Zabljak. Flights arrive here from various international airports including Belgrade (BEG), Copenhagen (CPH), Frankfurt (FRA), London-Gatwick (LGW), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Vienna (VIE) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst others. Several car rental companies are represented at the airport and there are taxis available here too.
