Holidaymakers looking for somewhere different to travel to in Central Europe should pay a visit to Tivat in Montenegro. This coastal town by the Adriatic coast has many fantastic things to do and see. Visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
Along the Tivat coast is some lovely sandy beaches such as Plavi Horizont (The Blue Horizon), which are ideal for sunbathing and taking a swim in the Adriatic Sea. Various watersports can be tried here such as sailing, sport fishing and scuba diving. Holidaymakers can participate in various land based sports too such as ten-pin bowling, lawn bowling, tennis, basketball and soccer.
The area in and around Tivat has some lovely scenic coastal walks that can be enjoyed by hikers as well as cyclists. The longest walking/cycling path is 10 kilometres from Gornja Lastva to Vrmac Fortress. The sea views and the bay provide a good setting for taking photograph and painting landscapes.
Many bars, cafes and restaurants are located in Tivat serving local dishes and some international fare too. The area has a good choice of shops with various gifts and souvenirs. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from various stores in the town.
Holidaymakers will find many fascinating places and sites to visit in the Tivat area including the Buca Summer House. This is located in the centre of Tivat and consists of living quarters, a little church, a gallery and the garden has been turned into an open-air theatre. Visitors to the town will see many monasteries and churches such as the Holy Archangel Michael’s Monastery and the Church of St Mihovil. The latter is situated next to the castle and tower of the Buca family. The town park is a beautiful area with exotic plants well worth visiting too. Holidaymakers interested in birds may like to go to Solila, where there is a habitat of flamingos and cormorants.
July and August are the warmest months of the year with average high temperatures of 28 degrees centigrade. The coldest month is January with average highs of 7 degrees centigrade and lows of -1 degree, although the temperature can drop below zero during the winter months. November is usually the wettest month with an average of 190mm.
Tivat Airport (TIV) is two and a half miles from Tivat city centre and has flights arriving from Belgrade (BEG), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG).
Alternatively Podgorica Airport (TGD) is approximately one hour and 40 minute’s drive from Tivat. Flights arrive here from various international airports including Belgrade (BEG), Copenhagen (CPH), Frankfurt (FRA), London-Gatwick (LGW), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Vienna (VIE) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst others. Several car rental companies are represented at the airport and there are taxis available here too.
