The South Pacific is a tropical island paradise which most people have on their dream wish list. For those lucky enough to visit, Vanuatu is a chain of 13 large islands in the South West Pacific Ocean. Volcanic in origin, the islands are mountainous and covered in tropical rain forest. They have beautiful soft sandy beaches and are surrounded by clear warm seas. Tourists will find that English and French are widely spoken on these islands.
Swimming, snorkeling and diving are the most popular activities around your Vanuatu holiday home base. The warm clear waters have around 4000 species of marine life to be enjoyed. There is excellent scuba diving to wreck sites as well as deep underwater canyons. Relax on the beautiful sandy beaches around Vanuatu or go sailing, game fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and water-skiing. Due to the prolific marine life, birds thrive around Vanuatu, especially large seabirds, making bird watching particularly rewarding. The breeding season for birds is from September to January which is the best time to view them. Hiking on the islands is also a popular activity.
A visit to the capital, Port-Vila, is an interesting day out. It has a Cultural Centre with an extensive collection of artifacts as well as great beaches. Yasur on Tanna Island is where visitors can peer into the crater of this active volcano and see the bubbling lava. The village of the John Frum Cargo cult can also be visited.Scuba divers will want to spend time on Espiritu Santo Island, home of the sunken ship President Coolidge and the destroyer USS Tucker.
Vanuatu has a sunny tropical climate which is characterized by hot and humid conditions almost all year long. The best time to rent a holiday home on Vanatua is from May to October, which is the dry season. Daytime highs in the South Pacific islands range from 26°C (79°F) in August to 31°C (88°F) in February
The main airport serving Vanuatu is the Port-Vila Bauerfield (VLI) Airport which is 6km (4 miles) from the city centre. Buses and taxis are available to deliver visitors to their chosen holiday homes on Vanuatu. For those who want to island hop, there is a South Pacific Pass which gives discounted flights between the islands. Flights from London to Vanuatu take a total of 30 hours, including transfers.
